Glenville State Baseball Hosts West Virginia State

Glenville, W.Va. - GSU Baseball is set to face the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State this weekend in a four-game series. The Pioneers are six games out of the final MEC Tournament spot with 16 conference games remaining. With the Yellow Jackets still having to face Concord and Charleston, this weekend's series has major implications in the league standings.

A Look at Your Pioneers

Glenville State is coming off a four-game series to the University of Charleston where the Pioneers went (1-3). In game two GSU was locked into a pitcher's dual. Diego Tamariz got the start for Glenville and picked up his seventh win of the season. Nick Moore would be called upon out of the bullpen in the seventh inning. The Virginia Beach, Va. native held the Golden Eagles in check earning his third save of the 2023 campaign. 

In Mountain East Conference play the bats for the Pioneers have jumped up to a .254 batting average. Since returning to the lineup from injury Zach Morris has been one of Glenville's better hitters. Morris in his thirteen appearances has produced 12 hits and drove in seven RBIs. Junior Mason Lohr leads the Pioneers in on-base percentage during this stretch. Lohr's .491 on-base percentage is the tenth-best in the MEC during conference contests.

A Look at the Yellow Jackets

West Virginia State enters this weekend tied for second in the Mountain East Conference South Division. The Yellow Jackets have been on a good run winning eight of their last ten. In MEC play WVSU has nine consecutive. So far this season the Yellow Jackets lead the conference in home runs with 42.

West Virginia State through the 2023 campaign has had three batters have an average of over .300. Tyler Overaitis has been the Yellow Jackets' best hitter with a .402 batting average and producing 23 RBIs. WVSU's power this season comes from Nathan Paulsen Conner Fizer and Mike Huber. The Three Yellow Jackets have combined for 22 home runs this season.
