Pioneer Baseball Spits Sunday Doubleheader with West Virginia State

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball spit the second half of their four-game series with the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. The Pioneers would have to use a total of seven different pitchers throughout both games. In game one the Pioneers went into extra innings and found a way to pull away late. Game two also went into extras but a late home run swung the momentum in their favor.

Game One Glenville State 8 West Virginia State 7 

Glenville State jumped out to a quick two-run lead. The Pioneers started off the first inning with a walk. Back-to-back singles quickly loaded up the bases. Calen Kampes's single to right field scored the first run of the game. During the following frame, GSU once again had the bases loaded. This time Zach Bayor drove in a run for the Pioneers with a single through the left side. 

At the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets started to dig into Glenville's advantage. A solo home run by West Virginia State made it 2-1. However, GSU found a way in the bottom half of the frame to regain their two-run lead. Zach Bayor picked up his second RBI of the day with a solo home run. 

The Yellow Jackets in the sixth inning took its first advantage of the contest. West Virginia State's Mike Huber hit his second homer of the contest to tie it 3-3. WVSU During their next at-bat hit another home run giving the Yellow Jackets a one-run lead. At the top of the seventh West Virginia State made it 5-3 with a single up the middle. 

Glenville during the final stretch of the first game came in clutch in the seventh and eighth innings. GSU in the seventh frame tied it up with two outs on Ryan Rodriguez's single to the outfield forcing extras. West Virginia State in the top half of the eighth made it 7-5 with a single and a balk. The Pioneers were able to walk it off in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Jrolf's sacrifice fly scored Glenville's first run that they needed. GSU was able to secure the win on back-to-back walks.

Before the weather would cause a stoppage of play halfway through the contest, only one run had come across the plate in game two. At the bottom of the third Zach Bayor's sacrifice fly scored Mason Lohr. While the Pioneers had used multiple arms in the first game, a combination of Nick Moore, Julian Minaya, and Josue Matos held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through five. 

Just as West Virginia State did in the first contest, they would take the lead in the sixth inning. Two of the Yellow Jackets' three runs were unearned. Kyle Walter's single to left field scored the only earned run. Glenville in the bottom half of the frame tied it up 3-3. Fabian Escalante led off the inning with a solo home run.  With a runner on second Ryan Rodriguez's single to the outfield tied drove in the tying run. 

It wouldn't be until the ninth inning that either team could break the tie. West Virginia State with a three-run homer shifted the momentum in their favor. While the Pioneers found a way to score a run in the ninth, the Yellow Jackets were able to get the third out ending game two.
