GSU Baseball Splits Sunday Series With the Cardinals of Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball split Sunday's doubleheader with the Cardinals of Wheeling University.  In game one the Pioneers trailed early but continued to stay within striking distance of Wheeling.  GSU from the jump in the second contest was in control and the bats continued to stay hot.

Game One Glenville State 4 Wheeling University 5

Glenville was in trouble early during game one. The Cardinals were able to load the bases early with two singles and a walk. A single to the outfield made it 2-0 in favor of Wheeling. In the top of the third WU grew its advantage to three with a solo home run.

The Pioneers started to dig into the Cardinal's advantage at the bottom of the fourth, Zach Morris started the frame out with a solo home run. Fabian Escalante quickly put more runners in scoring position with a double. Glenville on the next at-bat executed the sacrifice bunt to perfection scoring Carlos De Jesus from third.

However, the Wheeling jumped out to another three-run lead. At the top of the fifth, a two-run homer quickly made it 5-2. The Pioneers would respond in the bottom half of the frame with a run of their own. De Jesus's single scored Mathew Mangum cutting it down to two.

A late home run by Chase Swain made it a run contest. While Glenville had a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers could not drive him across.

Game Two Glenville State 10 Wheeling University 0

Glenville started the second contest on fire producing five runs in the first inning alone. After Mathew Mangum started the frame with a walk, Chase Swain brought him in with a home run. Freshman Carlos De Jesus produced another two-run shot for the Pioneers.  Before Wheeling could record the third out Mathew Mangum's single made it 5-0.

During the fifth and sixth innings, GSU doubled their advantage. Brandon Layne and Mason Lohr drove in runs in the fifth making it 8-0. The Pioneers had one more opportunity to bat and the offense stayed rolling. Ryan Rodriguez picked up his first hit of the doubleheader while producing his second RBI of the contest. Towards the end of the frame, Calen Kampes's single through the left side drove in the final run.
