Pioneer Baseball Splits First Half of Four-Game Series With Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Glenville State baseball split the first half of this weekend's four-game series with the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston. While the bats of UC torched the Pioneers in game one, GSU battled back in game two coming out with a victory. Glenville remains .500 in conference play heading into Saturday's doubleheader.

Through the first three innings, both sides were held scoreless. The Pioneers Austin Corn got the start and Caleb Rush for the Golden Eagles. After facing six batters in the first Rush would be pulled and UC brought in Ethan Soderna. 

In the bottom of the fourth Charleston broke the scoreless streak. The Golden Eagles scored their first run on a groundout to short followed by a sacrifice fly. However, throughout the next two innings UC's bats were on fire.  Two three-run homers produced a quick six runs for Charleston. Heading into the final frame, the Pioneers trailed 11-0.

Glenville's offensive woes continued in the final inning. UC after walking Zach Laurie, Charleston produced the last out.

The Pioneers got on the board first in the second half of today's doubleheader. Mathew Mangum led off the inning with a single to third. With runners on first and third Calen Kampes's single up the middle gave GSU a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom half of the frame, Charleston quickly took a 2-1 lead with a two-run shot to left field.

Glenville was able to tie it back up in the next inning. With a lead-off double by Christian Davila and back-to-back walks, the basses would be full of Pioneers. Zach Morris drove in a run with a fielder's choice scoring Davila from third. At the top of the fourth GSU took the lead. Mason Lohr picked up his first RBI of the day on a groundout to first. 

Diego Tamariz got the start for Glenville in game two. Tamariz pitched six and two-thirds innings for the Pioneers. Diego throughout the contest was lights out producing nine strikeouts while only allowing five hits. Nick More would be called in to relieve during the seventh inning. Moore picked up his second save of the season getting the final two batters out in five pitches.
