Pioneer Baseball Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive Completing Sweep of D&E

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball closed out their four-game series with the Senators of Davis and Elkins College this afternoon. The Pioneers were able to sweep today's doubleheader and get back to being .500 in conference play. Game One GSU walked it off late but in the second contest, the bats for the Pioneers were on fire.

Game One Glenville State 9 Davis and Elkins 8

Glenville got on the board early in the first contest and built an early advantage. Zach Bayor gave the Pioneers their first base runner of the afternoon with a single through the left side. Later on in the inning, Fabian Escalante moved Bayor into scoring position with a double. Calen Kampes with his first home run of the 2023 campaign made it 3-0.

Julian Minaya was lights out for GSU through the first three innings. Before Coby Howatineck would be called from the bullpen, Minaya had produced nine strikeouts. Davis and Elkins in the fourth inning found a way to tie it up. The Senators in the fourth frame alone had five hits.

Glenville in the bottom half of the inning quickly regained their advantage. With two outs Zach Morris got on base with a single to left field. Fabian Escalante came in clutch for the Pioneers once more. Escalante had a two-run homer to right field that made it 5-3.

Heading into the final frame GSU had the lead 8-4. The Senators once again found a way to tie it up. Before Glenville could record two outs, Davis and Elkins scored with a double down the line then with a sacrifice fly to center. Back-to-back doubles by D&E would drive in the two runs needed to make it 8-8.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, it seemed that Pioneers would be headed to extra innings. However, senior Chase Swain answered the call for GSU. Swain a native of Ravenswood, W.Va. walked it off for the Pioneers with a solo home run to right field.

Game Two Glenville State 18 Davis and Elkins 2

Davis and Elkins jumped out to an early advantage in game two of the doubleheader. The Senators with a runner on second drove him in with a single to the outfield. Glenville just as they did in game one got on the board in the first inning. With runners on first and third a fielders choice that advanced Calen Kampes tied it up 1-1.

Throughout the next two innings, 14 runs came across for the Pioneers. Glenville did not have as much success with the long ball in the second half of this afternoon's doubleheader. During this stretch half of GSU's 18 hits were produced in the second and third inning. Zach Bayor finished game two a perfect 4-4 while drawing two walks.

During the final stretch of the contest, the Pioneers would have a lot of firsts. Will Goldman, Jacob Hoyt, and Vincent Turner all record their first collegiate hit. Turner's first career hit was also a three-run home run. At the top of the seventh Brain Gifford was called upon out of the bullpen. Gifford closed out the contest for Glenville while producing his first collegiate strikeout. The Pioneers 18-2 win secured the series sweep and kept GSU's playoff push alive.
