Pioneer Baseball Splits First Half of Four Game Series with the Bobcats

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball opened their four-game series with the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan this afternoon. The Pioneer's bats caught fire early on in game one leading to a five-run victory. The second half of the doubleheader started out scoreless but opened up in the final four innings. While GSU is outside of the playoff picture, Glenville can still make history by finishing above .500 in conference play in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.

Game One Glenville State 12 West Virginia Wesleyan 7

While the Pioneers would be held scoreless in the first inning, the offense exploded in the second. Calen Kampes got the frame started with a triple down the line. Carlos De Jesus followed it up with a single scoring GSU's first run. After the Pioneers loaded the bases, three consecutive walks by the Bobcats made it 4-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan would score in the bottom half of the second, but the Pioneers were able to score more runs in the top of the third.  While the Bobcats got the first two outs quickly, GSU once again loaded the bases. Zac Bayor four-run shot cleared the bases and made it 8-0.

Throughout the next three frames, Glenville produced four more runs. While the Bobcats continued to score runs throughout they could not keep up with the Pioneers. Austin Corn got the start in game one and picked up his fourth win of the season. The Lakewood Ranch native Zac Bayor set a new career-high RBIs with six. Calen Kampes and Spencer Blackburn also finished the contest with multiple hits.

Game Two Glenville State 4 West Virginia Wesleyan 8

Nick Moore got the start for the Pioneers in game two and helped silence the Bobcat's bats. Moore in his five-plus innings of work had seven strikeouts. Halfway through the contest, Glenville took a three-run advantage.  With runners on first and third GSU struck first on a passed ball. With Calen Kampes on second Zach Morris hit a two-run homer to right field making it 3-0.

The Bobcats in the second inning started to claw into the Pioneer's lead. After Glenville got two outs, West Virginia Wesleyan had a runner-in-scoring position with a double. WVWC was able to get their first run across with an error made by GSU. However, the Pioneers would answer Wesleyan's run at the top of the fifth. On Carlos De Jesus's sacrifice fly Glenville regained their three-run lead.

West Virginia Wesleyan had an explosive sixth inning to swing the momentum in their favor. In the sixth frame alone the Bobcats produced seven runs. During this stretch, WVWC was able to get their offense going with singles to the outfield. The Pioneers at the top of the third had a leadoff single but could not force extra innings.
Glenville resumes the road series against the Bobcats tomorrow with game three starting at 1:00 PM.
