Pioneer Baseball Takes Games Three and Four From West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Pioneer Baseball was able to sweep the second half of the four-game series this afternoon. The Pioneer's offense was lights out on both games producing a total of 24 runs. Fabian Escalante had dominant performances in both contests finishing the day with two doubles and a home run.

Game One Glenville State 14 West Virginia Wesleyan 3

Glenville as they did yesterday in game one jumped out to a commanding lead early on. Zac Bayor led off the contest with a single. Early on the Pioneers had runners on first and second. GSU was able to score their first run by taking advantage of an error made by the Bobcats. With a Zach Morris double Glenville State produced a three-run advantage.

At the top of the second, the Pioneers were able to double their lead. In back-to-back frames, GSU started off with a leadoff single. With runners on first second once more Zach Laurie drove in two more runs with a double to the outfield. Following the double Fabian Escalante cleared the bases with a two-run home run making it 7-0.

While the Bobcats were able to get on the board midway through the contest, Glenville's bats continued to create runs. GSU during the fifth frame scored twice with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Zach Laurie. In the bottom half of the inning, West Virginia Wesleyan curt the Pioneer's advantage down to six.

Later on in the contest the Pioneers offense caught fire in the sixth. While Glenville only had five hits in the inning five runs would come across. Matthew Mangum and Mason Lohr both picked up their first RBIs of the day.

Senior Chase Swain picked up his fifth win of the 2023 campaign. Swain in his four-plus innings of work only allowed three runs while producing five strikeouts.

Game Two Glenville State 10 West Virginia Wesleyan 3

The Pioneers continued where they left off in game two scoring two quick runs in the first frame. Throughout the next two innings, GSU jumped out to a 7-0 advantage. Glenville during the second was able to score three runs with three consecutive doubles to the outfield. At the top of the third Mason Lohr and Zach Laurie scored the final runs to give Glenville a seven-run lead.

West Virginia Wesleyan in the bottom half of the third started to dig into the Pioneer's advantage. Zach Morris's solo shot to left field quickly made it 8-1. However, heading into the final frame the Bobcats made it a five-run contest. With Glenville producing a lead-off single once again, GSU shifted the momentum back in their favor. Before WVWC could record two outs, Mason Lohr drove in Andrew Jrolf with a double. During the next at-bat, Brandon Layne's groundout made it 10-3.

Julian Minaya would be called from the bullpen to close out the game. With Minaya striking out the final two batters, the Pioneers secured the win. In game two Diego Tamariz got the start and had five solid innings for GSU. Tamariz would finish the day with two strikeouts while only giving up two walks.
