Glenville State Softball Sweeps the Hilltoppers of West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State softball picked up two conference wins defeating the Hilltoppers of West Liberty. The Lady Pioneers now have a three-game lead over Davis and Elkins College in the South Division standings. GSU pulled off the sweep with the bats producing late in both contests.

Glenville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through the first two innings. Shelby Mcdaniels's double down the line drove in the first run for the Lady Pioneers followed by Kaelyn Stenger's single to right field. GSU's youth sinned once again at the bottom of the second. After Ashton Palmer got on base with a single, freshman Emma McLean brought her in on a double down the left-field line. 

While the Hilltoppers made it a one-run contest, Addison Aguiniga hit a solo home run making it 4-2. During the top of the fifth, the momentum started to sing in West Liberty's favor. WLU's designated player hit a three-run shot putting them up by one.

However, Glenville's offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth. During this stretch, the Lady Pioneers scored seven runs while producing eight hits. Before the Hilltoppers could record an out GSU had five consecutive singles. 

Heading into the final frame Glenville State had a six-run advantage. While West Liberty started the inning off with a double, the Lady Pioneers record three straight outs. Senior Holly Brehm picked up her eighth win of the 2023 campaign.

In game two the Hilltoppers got on the board first. Early on the Hilltoppers were able to score with a double to the outfield. GSU quickly tied it up in the third inning. Haylee Stevens led off the frame with a single up the middle. While West Liberty produced back-to-back outs, Stevens was able to move to third. Katelyn Richardson drove in the tying run with a single to center field. 

Late in the contest, the Lady Pioneers took the lead 2-1. At the bottom of the fifth GSU had runners on first and second with a hit by pitch and an error by the Hilltoppers. While Shelby Mcdaniels grounded out to third, Emma McLean was able to score 

Freshman Kylie Burdick got the start in game two. Burdick pitched a complete game and picked up her eighth win of the season. While on the mound Kylie produced seven strikeouts and only gave up two hits.
