Pioneer Softball Sweeps the Cardinals of Wheeling University

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball ended their 14-game stretch with two wins over the Cardinals of Wheeling. Throughout both contests, Glenville's seniors were key contributors. Before today's doubleheader, the Lady Pioneers honored seniors Haylle Stevens, Katelyn Richardson, Ashton Palmer, Kaelyn Stenger, Danica Ruest, and Madison Turner

Game One Glenville State 3 Wheeling 2

Glenville State got on the board early in the first inning.  Ashton Palmer got the frame started by reaching second on an error. Shelby Mcdaniels was able to drive in Palmer making it 1-0. The Lady Pioneers held onto their early advantage until the top of the third. Wheeling with runners on first and third laid down a bunt that scored a run. With a throwing error on the play, another run came across the plate.

Heading into the bottom half of the frame GSU trailed 2-1. Glenville quickly tied it up with Katelyn Richardson's single to center field. Until the end, the Lady Pioneers and the Cardinals would be tied. WU's Jenee Brodeu got the start and went six innings until Abby Brumbico was brought in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers led off the inning with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. Ashton Palmer's single in the infield gave GSU another base runner. Freshman Emma McLean scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.

Game Two Glenville State 7 Wheeling 4

Wheeling struck first in game two with a two-run homer. Freshman Kylie Burdick after the early home run settled in and battled. Burdick pitched a complete game for the Lady Pioneers only walking two batters.

In the span of three innings, Glenville's bats caught fire producing five runs. The Lady Pioneers' first run during this stretch came from Kaelyn Stenger's ground out to second.  Stenger later on during the third got her second RBI of the contest. While Kaelyn was accredited for one RBI, two runs came across giving GSU the lead. During the fourth inning, Katelyn Richardson drove in two runs followed by Makenna Negley with an RBI double.

The Cardinals would make it a two-run game with a double to the outfield. However, in the bottom of the fifth GSU was able to answer the two runs. Senior Ashton Plamer made it 7-4 on a groundout in the infield.

Throughout the final innings, the Lady Pioneers were able to keep Wheeling's offense in check. Kylie Burdick picked up her eighth win breaking the record for most wins by a freshman.
