Pioneers Fall in Second Half of Four Game Series to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -  Glenville State Baseball dropped this afternoon's doubleheader with Charleston University Golden Eagles. Game one proved to be a close battle with UC pulling away late. During the second contest, the bats for Glenville could not get going.

Game One Glenville State 2 Charleston 3

Glenville found themselves trailing early on in the first half of the doubleheader. Charleston in the first inning took advantage of three consecutive walks to score their first run. A couple of innings later a sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The Pioneers during the top of the fifth found a way to tie it up. Ryan Rodriguez started off the frame with a leadoff double to right field. While Charleston got the second out of the inning after Mason Lohr was hit by a pitch, Brandon Layne hit a double to center field driving in two runs.

Both squads' bullpens after the fifth inning were lights out nullifying each other's bats. The Pioneers would run into trouble during the bottom half of the sixth and seventh. With Julian Minaya coming in to relieve Nick Moore, GSU headed into extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Glenville could not get the offense going. The Golden Eagles were able to get three quick outs. During the bottom half of the frame, UC loaded up the bases with three walks. Kyle West walked it off with a single securing a 3-2 win in favor of Charleston.

Game Two  Glenville State 2 Charleston 8

The Golden Eagles once again were able to score first. At the bottom of the third Charleston drove in a run with a single to right center field. After the first run cross, Glenville stopped another run from scoring. However, the momentum started to swing heavily in favor of UC in the fourth. A three-run homer grew the Golden Eagles' advantage to four.

Charleston continued to produce runs in the fifth inning making it 8-0. Back-to-back doubles to the outfield scored the first two runs. After a sacrifice fly drove in the third run of the inning, a single would be the final run scored.

The Pioneers during the final frame cut into the Golden Eagles' advantage. Zach Bayor led off the inning with a single to right field. Zach Laurie followed up the single with a two-run homer. After Laurie's home run UC produced three straight outs to end the game.
