ELKINS, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team forced 29 turnovers to help lead them to a 92-68 victory at Davis & Elkins tonight. GSU recorded 39 points off turnovers and 35 bench points in the win.
The Lady Pioneers had an ideal start to the game, scoring nine-straight points until the Senators found the scoring column. The pace picked up and Lauren Calhoun got active quick, knocking down five-straight buckets to extend the lead to 11 halfway though the opening quarter. GSU stayed consistent, taking a 26-13 lead into the following quarter. In the second, the lead jumped to 19 at the under-5 media timeout following the Lady Pioneers using second chance points to their advantage. 12 second quarter turnovers by D&E helped propel Glenville's lead even more, going up 57-27 at the break.
D&E chipped into the Lady Pioneer lead slightly at the start of the 2nd half, holding GSU scoreless for the first three and a half minutes until Lauren Calhoun connected on a free throw. A struggling third quarter shooting didn't hurt Glenville too much, holding onto a 23-point lead going into the final quarter. The pressure was amped up once again in the fourth, helping the Lady Pioneers increase their advantage to as much as 31 and eventually close out the 92-68 win.
The Final Stats
Five Lady Pioneers were in double figures tonight, led by Hya Haywood's 22 points and five assists. Lauren Calhoun had another double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Zhordan Shannon was another Lady Pioneer with a double-double, totaling 14 points and 11 rebounds. Chalon Miles (12 points) and Karrin Purchas (10 points) were the other Glenville scorers to reach double digits.
The Senators were led by Jackie Wright's 15 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Smith was held to just 11 points while being forced into four turnovers. Kaylee Milburn had a near double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down eight boards in the loss.
