Preview: Lady Pioneers Look to Avenge Earlier Season Losses with Matchups Against Frostburg State and Fairmont State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball looks to avenge a pair of earlier season losses and continue their eight-game winning streak this week with matchups against Frostburg State at home tomorrow (Jan. 31) and at Fairmont State on Saturday (Feb. 3). The Lady Pioneers fell to Frostburg State on the road earlier in the season 102-98 and lost at home to Fairmont State 88-70.

THE OPPONENTS 
FROSTBURG STATE
 
The Bobcats enter (10-8, 7-4 MEC) following a split in last week's games. They fell at home to West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday but recovered with a huge win over #10 Fairmont State 89-62 on Saturday in Frostburg. 

Jenna Eckleberry is in her second season as Head Coach of the Bobcats. In her first year leading the program, she led them to nine wins and their first MEC Tournament berth in program history. Eckleberry came to FSU after an eight-year stint at Shepherd where she won 118 games and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament twice. Prior to becoming a HC, she found her footing in the MEC as the top assistant coach at Fairmont State for seven seasons.   

Emilee Weakley leads Division II in scoring at 24.7 PPG while shooting 46% from the field and 41% from three-point range. Weakley is also one of the top rebounders on the team, grabbing 7.0 RPG. Maggie Sharp (10.3 PPG) and Jenna Muha (10.2 PPG) are the other Bobcats averaging double figures. Muha leads the team in rebounds with 7.6 RPG also. Alanna Tate has been consistent for FSU, averaging 9.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.2 SPG and a team leading 2.9 APG. 

FAIRMONT STATE 
The nationally ranked Falcons come in (15-3, 9-2 MEC) and are currently 1st in the MEC standings. FSU had won four in a row prior to their 89-62 blowout loss at Frostburg State on Saturday. 

Stephanie Anderson is in her fifth season leading the FSU WBB program. Anderson took over after spending five seasons as an assistant coach. Last year, Anderson led the Falcons to 23 victories which was the most since the 2014-15 season. During her time as an assistant, she helped lead Fairmont State to the MEC Tournament Championship game in 2017. Anderson played collegiately at California (Pa.). 

Alyssa DeAngelo leads the team and is fourth in the country in scoring, netting 20.1 PPG. Katy Darnell (13.7 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 2.7 APG, 3.1 SPG), Jalen Gibbs (13.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.9 SPG) and Leslie Huffman (11.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.9 APG, 2.2 SPG) have performed at a high level all season long in different aspects of the game. Madeline Huffman has been solid as well, leading the team in assists at 4.9 APG and adding 8.1 PPG. 

THE LADY PIONEERS

The Lady Pioneers enter the new week (14-4, 8-3 MEC) following road wins over West Virginia State on Wednesday and Concord on Saturday. GSU has also won their last eight games. 

Glenville State now has three scorers averaging double figures, led by Hya Haywood's 17.9 PPG. Lauren Calhoun (15.8 PPG) and Chalon Miles (10.4 PPG) are also averaging double digits as Calhoun leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 RPG. Haywood averages 2.9 APG and 3.4 SPG to lead the squad as well.
