GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball will host the annual Pioneer Classic this weekend (Feb. 23-25), welcoming Millersville, Charleston, Mercyhurst, D'Youville and West Chester to Glenville. The Pioneers will play Mercyhurst on Friday (Feb. 23), Millersville on Saturday (Feb. 24) and West Chester on Sunday (Feb. 25).

THE OPPONENTS
MERCYHURST
The Lakers enter (1-0) after opening the season with a 16-0 victory over Notre Dame College on Feb. 9. Mercyhurst finished the 2023 campaign (30-17, 21-7 PSAC), advancing to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament where their season would be ended by Seton Hill.
In just one game, the Lakers had six different players hit a home run with Zachary Kourous leading the way with three hits, a HR and 5 RBI. Jack Malec went 3-for-4 to lead the team in average at .750. MU had four pitchers take the field, pitching nine innings of five-hit baseball.
MILLERSVILLE
The Marauders check in at No. 7 in this week's NCBWA National poll with a record of (4-2). MU started the new year with a win over #5 Central Missouri and a loss to now #1 Tampa. They have won three of their last four.
Matthew Williams enters the weekend with a slashing line of .500 AVG, 3 HR, 11 RBI and an OPS of 1.571. Mark McNelly has started the year out strong, batting .438 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. On the hill, Alex Mykurt has pitched 10.2 IP with a 1.69 ERA, 2-0 record and 12 strikeouts.
WEST CHESTER
The Golden Rames will open their 2024 season on Friday against Charleston after finishing the 2023 campaign (32-20, 14-10 PSAC) and reaching the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament. They enter the new week #21 in the nation.
John DeMucci returns after slashing .345 last year with 60 hits, eight doubles, two triples, four home runs and 23 RBI. Andrew Cantwell is also back following a 2023 season that saw him hit .305 with a team leading 8 HR and 42 RBI. Julian Costa led the rotation last season, having an ERA of 3.27 with a 6-2 record and 75 strikeouts.
THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
The Pioneers are (2-1) after taking two of three against Clarion this past weekend. The Pioneers met with Millersville last year, losing 7-2.
Fabian Escalante is batting .800 (8-for-10) with 3 RBI and three stolen bases. Carlos De Jesus is second on the team in AVG (.273) and hits (three). Cole Grady opened the year with four innings of no-run ball, striking out six in the process. Julian Minaya came out of the pen, allowing no runs in three innings of relief.
