Preview: Women’s Basketball Hits Crucial Final Week with Contests Against Charleston & Concord

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball has a big week ahead of them with matchups at home against Charleston tomorrow (Feb. 28) and Concord on Saturday (Mar. 2). The Lady Pioneers defeated both the Golden Eagles and Mountain Lions on the road earlier in the year.

THE OPPONENTS 
CHARLESTON 

The Golden Eagles enter (17-9, 12-6 MEC) and are winners of four in a row. Dating back to late January, UC has won eight of their last nine. They currently sit tied for 3rd in the MEC standings, one game ahead of the Lady Pioneers.  

Tianni Kelly is in her fourth season leading the Golden Eagles. In her first three seasons at the helm, Kelly led UC to three-consecutive MEC Championship game appearances, two MEC Championships and an Atlantic Regional Championship. Kelly has also gotten Charleston into the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons. She was previously an assistant at Valdosta State and Florida Southern. 

Clarissa Francis leads the Golden Eagles in scoring (15.4 PPG) and rebounding (6.3 RPG). Nia Vanzant (12.1 PPG) and Taylor Austin (11.7 PPG) are averaging double figures as well, aiding the UC offense. Austin is dishing out a team leading 3.5 APG and grabbing 4.8 RPG to go with her scoring.  

CONCORD 
The Mountain Lions come in (15-11, 10-8 MEC) after splitting last week against Wheeling (W, 74-71) and West Liberty (L, 110-103). CU will take on West Virginia State tomorrow before traveling to Glenville on Saturday. 

Tesla Southcott is in her second season leading Concord WBB. In her first season leading the program, the Southcott-led Mountain Lions went (14-17, 9-13 MEC) and finished 7th in the MEC. They would go on a run in the MEC Tournament, winning their opening round game and upsetting #2 seeded West Virginia State in the quarterfinals before falling to Charleston in the semifinals. Prior to taking over, Southcott was an assistant under recently retired Kenny Osborne for eight seasons. 

Jaisah Smith (15.2 PPG) and Abbie Smith (14.2 PPG) lead the Mountain Lions offensive attack. Abbie Smith is pulling down a team leading 8.3 RPG while Jaisah Smith is putting together a stat line of 5.9 RPG, 2.4 SPG and 2.1 APG. Skylar Davidson is dishing out 4.6 APG, which leads the team while scoring 9.2 PPG.  

THE LADY PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE
 
The Lady Pioneers enter the new week (18-8, 11-7 MEC), winning three of their last four contests. GSU is 5th in the MEC standings, sitting half a game ahead of Wheeling and trailing UC & WVSU by a game for 3rd. 

After a week of averaging over 20 PPG, Hya Haywood is scoring 16.9 PPG to lead the Lady Pioneers. Lauren Calhoun (14.6 PPG, 7.8 RPG), Chalon Miles (11.7 PPG, 3.5 RPG) and Dream Cherry (9.4 PPG, 3.0 RPG) have been other valuable options on the offensive end. Haywood leads the team in steals (3.2 SPG) and assists (3.0 APG) as well.
