GSU Softball Splits with WVSU in Conference Opener

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Softball team opened conference play up with a split against West Virginia State earlier today at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. The Pioneers lost in the first game of the day 3-1 but bounced back with a run-rule victory in the second game, 11-3. 

Game One – GSU 1 | WVSU 3 
The Yellow Jackets got up early, plating two runs in the top of the 1st with an RBI double and an error by the Pioneer defense. After holding GSU scoreless in the bottom half of the first, WVSU scored another run, this time on a passed ball. Shelby McDaniels got Glenville on the board in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI double to left, trimming the deficit to two. 

The Pioneers were able to put runners on base, but struggled to bring them home. In the bottom of the 7th, the bases were loaded with two outs, however a flyout to center secured the win for WVSU. 

Box Score 
Kylee Goodman and Hannah Howe both finished with two hits each while Shelby McDaniels ended the first game of the day with the only RBI for the Pioneers. Holly Brehm took the loss, surrendering three runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk. She struck out 12 in the loss. 

Five Yellow Jackets recorded a hit, led by Autumn Thompson's 1 RBI. Thompson was also in the circle, picking up the win after dishing out a complete game. She allowed one run (earned) on seven hits and three walks. 

Game Two – GSU 11 | WVSU 3 (5 Inn.) 
Kylie Burdick sat the WVSU lineup down in order to start the game, being rewarded with two runs from the Pioneer offense on an RBI double from Delaney Warnick and a sac fly from Kaitlyn Rizor. The Yellow Jackets wasted no time responding, plating a run in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom half of the second, Warnick drove in another run to boost the Pioneer lead to 3-1.  

WVSU tied the game up in the 3rd on back-to-back RBI singles. Following a pair of scoreless innings, the GSU offense exploded in the 5th. Eight consecutive runs would be scored on a home run, three RBI singles and a 2-run double, closing out the 11-3 victory for the blue and white. 

Box Score 
Delaney Warnick and Kylee Goodman led the Pioneer bats with three hits each while Warnick led the team with 3 RBI. Monica Rodelo, Shelby McDaniels and Emma McLean all recorded 2 RBI in the win. Kylie Burdick picked up her second W of the season, striking out two with three runs (two earned) allowed. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by Autumn Thompson's three hits. Two Yellow Jackets picked up an RBI with Autumn Hall being handed the loss in the circle, going 4.1 innings while giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks.
