Softball Earns Key Sweep Against Notre Dame College

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Softball team picked up two important Mountain East Conference wins against Notre Dame College today, pushing the Pioneers above .500 overall (19-18) and back to .500 in conference play (13-13). GSU won game one 5-2 and game two 2-1.

Game One – GSU 5 | NDC 2
Both squads struggled to put together much offense through the first three innings of the game, however that would change in the 4th inning when Notre Dame plated two runs on an RBI double and RBI single. In the following inning, an NDC error with two outs helped the Pioneers keep the inning alive and plate a run to trim the deficit to one. In the next at-bat, Monica Rodelo really made the Falcons pay with a three-run shot to give GSU the lead.

Holly Brehm got another insurance run in the bottom of the 6th on a Makenna Negley solo home run, making it a three-run advantage for Glenville. Holly Brehm was able to put the Falcons away in the top of the 7th, securing the 5-2 victory for the Pioneers.

Box Score
Monica Rodelo was 2-3 with 3 RBI to lead the GSU offense. Addison Aguiniga recorded two hits while four other Pioneers finished with a hit. Makenna Negley and Emma McLean added an RBI each as well. Holly Brehm picked up her 10th win of the season, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits and 12 strikeouts.

Four Falcons accounted for the four hits today, led by Meadow Odum and Jocelyn Quior picking up a hit and an RBI each. Grace Fisher was handed the loss after 5.1 innings of work, giving up five runs (two earned) on eight hits and seven strikeouts.

Game Two – GSU 2 | NDC 1
The Pioneers were able to get on the board early with a 1st inning error by the NDC defense, making it 1-0 after an inning of play. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Falcons knotted the game at one all with an RBI single in the 4th. The tie didn't last long as Shelby McDaniels was able to get a pop up to drop in front of the shortstop with two outs, allowing the Pioneers to go up by a run.

Meghan Stump worked through the 6th inning easily with the 7th being much tougher for the freshman. A leadoff double and a runner at third with one out gave NDC a chance, however Stump forced two fly outs to hold onto the 2-1 win for GSU.

Box Score
Emma McLean was 2-3 to lead GSU while Shelby McDaniels and Monica Rodelo finished with an RBI each. Meghan Stump went the full seven innings, giving up one run (earned) on six hits and two walks. She struck out four batters en route to her first collegiate win.

Six different Falcons recorded a hit, led by Danielle Fick's one hit and RBI. Allison Wellnau was handed the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks.
