Pioneer Baseball Notches Four-Game Sweep at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the Davis & Elkins Senators yesterday, defeating D&E 13-10 in game one and 12-6 in game two. With the victories, the Pioneers are now tied with West Virginia State for 2nd in the MEC South Division.  

Game One – GSU 13 | D&E 10 
The Pioneers were able to put up six runs in the first two innings, hitting four RBI singles and using an error by the D&E defense. The Senators added a run in the bottom half of the 2nd, but Glenville State would answer back with a four-spot in the top of the 4th, extending their lead to 10-1. A few innings later, Davis & Elkins had their bats come alive in full force, plating a miraculous nine runs to tie the game at 10 all. GSU used a two-run home run from Carlos De Jesus and an RBI single from Mason Lohr in the 7th to regain the lead, eventually closing out the Senators in the bottom of the 7th to take the 13-10 victory. 

Box Score 
Lance Minson and Luke Sweigart finished with three hits each while Adam Bright and Zac Bayor recorded two hits apiece. Five different Pioneers drove in two runs in the win. Christopher Thompson was given the victory out of the pen and Grant Landis picked up his seventh save of the year, closing the door in the 7th. 

Isaac Lane and Logan Sloane led the Senators with two hits while Aydin Zimmerman had 3 RBI. Marcus Rivera took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings of relief and allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and a walk. 

Game Two – GSU 12 | D&E 6 
Zac Bayor got the scoring started with a two-run blast in the top of the 2nd, however D&E responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a three-run lead. The Pioneers would then answer right back in the top of the third with three runs to tie it up and eventually take the lead in the 4th on a Zach Morris RBI single. The Senators plated a run in the bottom of the 4th, once again tying the game up. 

A six-run 6th inning allowed Glenville State to pull away as the bullpen held it down in both the 6th and 7th inning for the Pioneers as they picked up the 12-6 victory. 

Box Score 
Fabian Escalante, Zac Bayor and Luke Sweigart finished with two hits while Bayor drove in three runs and Escalante brought home two. Lance Minson and Carlos De Jesus also had 2 RBI. Noah Petrovich pitched a phenomenal 3.2 innings out of the pen, allowing no runs and just two hits to secure his first win of the year. 

The Senators were led by Zach Calef-Boring and Marcus Rivera with both having two hits and 2 RBI in the loss. After coming out of the bullpen, Dariell Melendez-Perez took the defeat, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits. 

Up Next For The Pioneers 
The Pioneers are back at Kenny Greenlief Field next weekend for a four-game series with West Virginia Wesleyan.
