Baseball Breaks Three GSU Records in Doubleheader Sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team broke three GSU records in their doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan today, beating the Bobcats 6-3 in game one and 17-3 in game two. Diego Tamariz broke the all-time record in career strikeouts with 210, Fabian Escalante broke the single season record in doubles with his 16th two-bagger and Grant Landis broke the saves single season record with his eighth of the campaign. With the wins, the Pioneers are 10 games over .500 (17-7) in MEC play. 

Game One – GSU 6 | WVWC 3 
After a scoreless first inning, Luis Liriano put the first run of the day on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. WVWC took the lead in the top of the 5th with a two-out 3-run HR over the center field wall. Fabian Escalante answered back in the bottom half of the 5th with a moonshot that tagged the scoreboard and tied the game up at three all. 

Liriano put the Pioneers on top with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 6th and Lance Minson was hit by a pitch to add an insurance run. Grant Landis came in and closed the door on the Bobcats in the 7th, giving GSU the 6-3 victory.  

Box Score 
Fabian Escalante, Zac Bayor and Luis Liriano all had two hits while Liriano (3 RBI), Escalante (2 RBI) and Lance Minson (1 RBI) all contributed in bringing home runs. Julian Minaya went six innings, picking up win #7 on the year with three runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out four as well. Grant Landis struck out two en route to his eighth save. 

Luke Burner went 3-3 on the day as Devin Johnosn led the Bobcats with 3 RBI. Anthony Hernandez took the loss, allowing six runs (all earned) on 10 hits and five walks.  

Game Two – GSU 17 | WVWC 3 
GSU waited until the 2nd inning to have the bats explode, plating an extraordinary 12 runs in the inning on three home runs, two 2-RBI doubles and an RBI single. WVWC plated a run in the 3rd, followed by Luke Sweigart doubling off the wall in the bottom of the 4th to answer back. Two more runs by the Bobcats made it a 10-run game. A pair of home runs in the 5th inning allowed GSU to make it a 16-3 game. Will Goldman got in on the home run party in the 6th with a solo shot as the Pioneers eventually closed the book on the game at 17-3.

Lance Minson (3-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI), Luke Sweigart (3-3, 2 RBI), Fabian Escalante (2-4, 2 RBI), Zach Morris (2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Luis Liriano (2-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Adam Bright (2 RBI), Carlos De Jesus (1 HR, 2 RBI) and Will Goldman (1 HR, 1 RBI) all filled up the stat sheet. Diego Tamariz went five innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits, three walks and six strikeouts. 

The Bobcats were led by Grant Shumaker and Devin Johnson's two hits and one RBI each. Broderick Rohrbaugh took the loss after just 1.2 innings of work, giving up 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits.
