GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team completed their second-consecutive four-game sweep and extended their win streak to 10 games against West Virginia Wesleyan today, defeating the Bobcats 9-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two.
Game One – GSU 9 | WVWC 1
WVWC put the first run of the day on the board in the top of the 1st on an RBI double. The Pioneers began adding runs as the innings went on, plating one in the 2nd on a sac fly from Carlos De Jesus, another run in the 3rd on an RBI single from Fabian Escalante and four runs in the 4th on a 2-RBI double from Luis Liriano and a 2-run HR from Mason Lohr.
A few innings later in the 6th, Luke Sweigart dobled in the left center gap and Liriano hit a 2-run HR to make it 9-1 Pioneers. The blue and white's bullpen stayed strong for the remainder of the game, securing the win for the Pioneers.
Box Score
Luis Liriano (2-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI), Mason Lohr (2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Fabian Escalante (2-4, 1 RBI) led the offensive attack for the Pioneers. Carlos De Jesus and Luke Sweigart also finished with an RBI each. Austin Corn went five innings, allowing one run (earned) on six hits and two walks to notch his fifth win of the year.
Jack Tilton and Luke Burner recorded two hits in the loss while Devin Johnson had the lone RBI for the Bobcats. Hunter Eplin took the defeat after 5.1 innings of work, giving up seven runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks.
Game Two – GSU 9 | WVWC 3
Just like game one, the Bobcats scored first, this time coming in the top of the 2nd. WVWC didn't hold the lead very long as Luis Liriano continued his weekend tear with a grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd. West Virginia Wesleyan began to chip away at the Pioneers lead, adding a run in the 3rd and the 5th to make it a one-run game.
Two runs in the 5th (Lance Minson solo home run, wild pitch) and three runs in the 6th (Fabian Escalante RBI single, Zach Laurie 2-RBI double) gave the cushion that the Pioneers were looking for. That cushion was more than enough, holding the Bobcats scoreless for the final two innings of the game and tallying the 9-3 victory.
Box Score
Mason Lohr and Lance Minson both recorded two hits while Luis Liriano led the Pioneers in RBIs with four. Zach Laurie added 2 RBI, followed by Minson and Escalante finishing with one each. Freshman Cole Grady picked up his fourth win of the year after 4.2 innings, three runs (all earned), six hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
Thatcher Poteat's two hits and Josh Ayala's two RBI led the Bobcats in defeat. Anthony Hernandez was given the loss following 4.1 innings of work, surrendering six runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk.
