Pioneer Baseball Splits Four-Game Set with Concord, Earns No. 2 Seed in South Division for MEC Tournament

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team split with Concord this weekend in a four-game split, losing both games at Concord on Friday but bouncing back with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at home. With the split, the Pioneers earned the No. 2 seed in the South Division for the MEC Tournament, finishing (21-9) in MEC play. 

Friday 
Game One – GSU 1 | CU 6 

Mason Lohr singled to lead the game off and made his way around the bases his own way with a pair of stolen bases and scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Concord quickly answered back with an RBI single to tie it up at one in the bottom of the 1st. From there, CU added a run in the 3rd and four in the 4th to go up by five runs, eventually closing out the Pioneers 6-1. 

Box Score 
Zach Morris and Zac Bayor had two hits while three other Pioneers finished with a hit. Julian Minaya took the loss after 3.1 innings of work, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits, three walks and five strikeouts.  

Three Mountain Lions had two hits while Daniel Layne went 2-4 with 3 RBI to lead the team. Amdrew Neff went the full seven innings, giving up one run (unearned) on seven hits, a walk and four strikeouts. 

Game Two – GSU 2 | CU 5 
Following a scoreless first inning, CU plated three runs in the 2nd inning on an RBI single and a 2-RBI single. The Pioneers made it a one-run game in the top of the 3rd on an Adam Bright RBI single and a fielder's choice. Concord then went back up by three runs in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single and a sac fly. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game as Concord secured the Friday doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 win. 

Box Score 
Adam Bright (2-3, 1 RBI) and Fabian Escalante (1-2, 1 RBI) led the Pioneers. Diego Tamariz took the loss after going 2.1 innings, surrendering five runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks.  

Seven different Mountain Lions had a hit with Tyson Burke and MJ Hunter both recording a hit and 2 RBI in the win. Eddie Blake was victorious, throwing a complete game with two runs allowed (both earned) on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. 

Sunday 
Game One – GSU 6 | CU 4 

Concord put the first runs of the GSU senior day on the board in the first inning on a two-run shot. Fabian Escalante cut the deficit in half with an RBI single to center in the bottom half of the inning. The Pioneers then went three straight innings with home runs, coming from Carlos De Jesus, Escalante and Luke Sweigart. CU powered a two-run home run in the 5th to make things interesting, however the GSU bullpen closed it down and held on to win 6-4. 

Box Score 
Fabian Escalante went 2-4 with 2 RBI while Luke Sweigart (2 RBI), Carlos De Jesus (2-2, 1 RBI) and Mason Lohr (1 RBI) helped the Pioneers to the win. Austin Corn went four innings, securing the win after allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits and four strikeouts. Grant Landis picked up his ninth save, striking out two as well. 

Daniel Layne and Chris Satcher both had 2 RBI for the Mountain Lions. Jake Robinson was handed the loss after coming out of the bullpen, giving up five runs (all earned) on eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts. 

Game Two – GSU 12 | CU 9 
CU once again opened the game with a two-run home run in the first inning. After Mason Lohr and Adam Bright got on base, Fabian Escalante took one over the scoreboard and to the parking lot to give the Pioneers the lead. A few batters later, Zac Bayor hit a two-run shot to make it 5-2. Luis Liriano then joined in on the home run parade, blasting his own two-run homer to close out a seven-run 1st inning. 

GSU added a run in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd, making it 10-2 Pioneers. Concord put a few runs on the board, followed by Bayor and Austin Carter answering back in the 6th with an RBI each. In the 7th, CU plated five runs but it would be too late as the Pioneers won 12-9. 

Box Score 
Zac Bayor (3-4, 3 RBI), Fabian Escalante (2-3, 5 RBI), Luis Liriano (2-2, 2 RBI), Austin Carter (1 RBI) and Zach Laurie (1 RBI) all contributed to the Pioneers victory. GSU deployed seven arms with Noah Petrovich picking up his second win of the year. 

Daniel Layne was 2-3 with 3 RBI to lead the Mountain Lions. Dawson Gragg and Austin Amtower both finished with 2 RBI in the defeat. Dalton Benson took the loss after just 0.1 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on two hits and two walks. 

Up Next For The Pioneers 
The Pioneers will play the Northern Division's #2 seed, Fairmont State, on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the MEC Tournament.
