Preview: Baseball Hosts Charleston to Start Southern Division Play

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball begins MEC Southern Division play this weekend, hosting Charleston tomorrow (Apr. 6) and Sunday (Apr. 7) for a four-game series. The Pioneers and the Golden Eagles are currently tied with West Virginia State for 1st in the division.

THE OPPONENT 
CHARLESTON
 
The Golden Eagles enter (21-6, 8-2 MEC) and have won seven in a row. UC last lost on Mar. 23 when they fell to Frostburg State in both games of a doubleheader. 

Dean Peterson is in his first year leading the Charleston Baseball program. Peterson came to UC after three seasons as the pitching coach at Frostburg State where he led three pitchers to All-Region recognition in 2023. Prior to his stop at FSU, he was the pitching coach at Allegheny College. 

Charleston boasts three players hitting .300 or better, led by JD Armstrong's .452 average with 3 HR and 20 RBI. Armstrong is tied for the team lead in hits with Hector Carreon-Herrera at 28 knocks while Herrera adds a team leading nine doubles with 2 HR and 27 RBI. Carter Rust is only hitting .205 but he is first on the squad in home runs with four. In seven starts, Owen MacNeil is 3-0 with 21 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.16. Trace Hartman has also been very solid for the Golden Eagles thus far, posting a 1.23 ERA through 22 innings pitched. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Pioneers come in with an overall record of (15-12) and an MEC record of (8-2), their best start to conference play in program history.  
Fabian Escalante (42 hits, .442 AVG, 13 doubles, 3 HR, 22 RBI), Mason Lohr (.373 AVG, 11 stolen bases, 2 HR, 20 RBI), Carlos De Jesus (.318 AVG, 4 HR, 13 RBI) and Zach Morris (.308 AVG, 30 hits, 3 HR, 23 RBI) currently lead the Pioneer bats. Lance Minson is tied for the team lead in home runs (4) while also posting a .277 AVG. Adam Bright has found his groove in the lineup, driving in 20 RBI on the year. With 17 HR in the last two weeks, the Pioneers are now up 25 on the season. 

Julian Minaya leads the GSU pitching staff, holding a record of 5-0 with an ERA of 2.59 and 49 strikeouts through 31.1 innings. Diego Tamariz and Cole Grady have picked up two wins while Grant Landis is 1-1 with six saves.
