Pioneers Drop First Two Games of Series Versus Charleston

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team dropped the first two games of their four-game set with Charleston today, losing 6-5 (11 Inn.) in game one and 8-0 in game two. With the losses, UC moves two games ahead of the Pioneers in the MEC South Division. 

Game One – GSU 5 | UC 6 (11 Inn.) 
Following a scoreless first inning, UC used a dribbler in the infield to plate the game's first run in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom half of the second, the Pioneers took the lead on a Carlos De Jesus RBI single and Mason Lohr getting hit by a pitch with the bases juiced. Zach Morris hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd to extend the Pioneer lead to 3-1. Charleston began to chip away at the deficit slowly, scoring a run in the 4th and another run in the 5th, tying it up at five all before gaining the advantage on a sac fly. 

With an RBI single in the 6th allowing the Golden Eagles to grow their lead to 5-3, the Pioneers were down to their final outs in the 7th. Lohr got on base for Fabian Escalante and he took full advantage, smashing a game-tying home run to send the contest to extras. Both teams exchanged opportunities in the upcoming innings, however Charleston hit a solo HR in the top of the 11th to eventually take the 6-5 victory. 

Box Score 
Three Pioneers recorded two hits while Fabian Escalante led the team with 2 RBI. Zach Morris, Mason Lohr and Carlos De Jesus all finished with an RBI as well. The Pioneers exhausted five total pitchers with Noah Petrovich taking the loss on the solo HR in the 11th. Julian Minaya struck out five and Christopher Thompson was phenomenal out of the pen, striking out three and allowing just one hit over 3.2 innings. 

JD Armstrong and Evan Ulrich both had two hits with Ulrich picking up 2 RBI. Four other Golden Eagles closed the game with an RBI in the win. UC also used five pitchers with Jimmy Breen pitching the final three innings, striking out four with just two hits. 

Game Two – GSU 0 | UC 8 
Charleston got on the Pioneers early, scoring on a double down the line in the 1st, followed up by four runs in the 2nd on a sac fly and a 3-run HR. UC scored the remainder of their runs in the top of the 3rd, hitting two more home runs with a solo HR and a 2-run shot. The Pioneers struggled to ger runners across for the entirety of the game, giving the Golden Eagles the 8-0 win. 

Box Score 
Five different Pioneers accounted for the five hits the GSU offense produced while Zac Bayor and Fabian Escalante both drew two walks. Diego Tamariz was handed the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) over 2.2 innings of work. 

Eric Chartier (2-3, 2 RBI), JD Armstrong (1-3, 3 RBI) and AJ Karosas (1-2, 3 RBI) led the Golden Eagles offense. Owen MacNeil went five innings to secure the win, surrendering no runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

The Pioneers complete the four-game series against Charleston tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
