Volleyball Takes Wheeling Four Sets in Defeat

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Volleyball team fell in four sets to MEC foe Wheeling on Saturday afternoon inside the Waco Center, 3-1. The Pioneers hadn't won a set against the Cardinals since 2007.

The first set began with both teams trading points as the game would be tied late at 17 after a Cali Queen kill and the Pioneers would have a one-point lead at 22-21, however WU scored the final four points, winning set one, 25-22. GSU controlled set two from the beginning, building a sizable lead at 16-11 after a Mikayla Curry kill, and would continue their momentum to take the second set, 25-17. The Pioneers had a slim lead early in set three, but the Cardinals would have a six-zero rally in the middle stages and pulled away to win the third set, 25-17, to take a lead in the match. In the fourth set, WU built an early lead, but a quick three-to-zero run by Glenville State cut the lead in half but Wheeling tallied five out of the final six to secure the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-1.

Katie Wilking had 15 kills while Camryn Matus had 12 and Faith Keifer had 30 assists to lead the team. On defense, Megan Platt had 21 digs and Aleithia Wilking had three blocks.

Glenville State
Kaiya Lian had 12 kills to pace the Pioneer attack while Keleigh Chrisman had 11 and Cali Queen had nine. Sadie Hill had 24 assists and Elitsa Peneva recorded 22. Defensively, Queen had 21 digs and Ava O'Hare had 18 with Deniz Selen Yazar notching two blocks.

GSU will hit the road for their next match on Tuesday (Oct. 28) as they will face Davis & Elkins College. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
