Pioneers Split Doubleheader to Win Series Against Clarion

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team earned their first series win earlier today, splitting a doubleheader with Clarion at SMSC. The Pioneers dropped the first matchup of the day, 6-3, in extra innings but bounced back with a 3-1 victory in the final game of the series. The Pioneers start the year (2-1) while Clarion falls to (1-2).

Game One - GSU 3 I Clarion 6 (8 Inn.)
The first contest began in a tense stalemate with no runs through four innings. Clarion broke the tie with a 2-run homer in the top of the 4th with Glenville State not putting a run on the board until Zach Laurie's sac fly scored Colby Guy to make it 2-1 after the 6th. The Pioneers fired up the rally and tied the game at 2 with a solo shot by Zac Bayor. However, the Eagles responded quickly with a grand slam that blew up their lead to four. Though the Pioneers attempted to push back with Carlos De Jesus scoring on a Zac Bayor single, they were unable to fight back from the deficit, losing 6-3.

Final Stats
Clarion
Six players recorded hits for the Golden Eagles with 3rd baseman Caden Contant having two to go along with two RBIs. Center fielder Griffin Snyder had the go-ahead grand slam, giving him four RBIs on the day. Reilly Shafer received the win with eight strikeouts and no walks to go along with two earned runs.

Glenville State
Zac Bayor had three hits from the DH spot with a solo home run along with an additional RBI for two on the game as well. Zach Laurie also had a pinch hit RBI while shortstop Adam Bright had two hits. William Chu received the loss and starter Cole Grady struck out four with two runs allowed in just over six innings pitched. Cameron Byers and Ty Walton also appeared in relief.

Game Two - GSU 3 I Clarion 1
The back half of the two games got underway fast with a run by Clarion on a wild pitch in the second frame. Glenville State responded in a strong way, stifling their offense and not allowing a run the rest of the game. The score remained 1-0 until a 5th inning walk scored Jonah Clem and tied things up. The tie would not last long as Colby Guy sent a two-run shot into right field to give the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage. The Pioneers would not relinquish the lead and took the victory, 3-1.

Final Stats
Clarion
The Golden Eagles were held to five hits in the game with their lone run scored by first baseman Brody Hinkle who also recorded a hit. Braden Fetherolf received the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on the go-ahead homer while starter Carter Barrett allowed one and had three strikeouts
