CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team took home a win in an away contest at the University of Charleston by a score of 81-72 earlier tonight. The result puts the Lady Pioneers at (17-10, 11-8 MEC) and in sole possession of fifth place heading into the regular season finale, while the loss puts the Golden Eagles at (15-12, 10-9 MEC).
The majority of the first quarter was a close battle with seven lead changes in the first eight minutes. Charleston eventually found their offensive groove in the game, going on a 9-3 run to hold a 23-14 lead at the end of the period. The Lady Pioneers continued to grind and would fight back to tie things at 39 with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. They would take the lead back not long after and were able to shut down the opposition to take a 43-41 lead into the locker room.
Both teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle out of the break with the Golden Eagles trying their best to hack away at the Glenville State lead. The Lady Pioneers continued to respond, and would not relinquish their lead, never trailing in the quarter and taking a 67-61 edge into the final stanza. Charleston wouldn't be held down forever, storming back to retake the lead at 68-67 just before the seven-minute mark. The Lady Pioneers did not let them take the momentum, retaking the lead and smothering the Golden Eagles on defense, allowing only four points the rest of the way, Glenville State held strong the rest of the way to secure the 81-72 victory.
