Baseball Launches Four Home Runs in Two Wins Over Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Baseball team wrapped up another busy weekend in victorious fashion, sweeping the visiting Wheeling Cardinals in a doubleheader yesterday (Mar. 30). The results of the weekend's triumphs find the Pioneers on a three-game win streak and elevated to 4th in the MEC South Division standings (14-14, 3-7 MEC), while the losses drop Wheeling to last in the North Division (8-16, 2-10 MEC).

Game One – GSU 7 I Wheeling 2
The first face off of the day got underway fast with the Cardinals scoring in the top of the first on a wild pitch and taking their first lead of the day. This advantage would be short lived as Zach Laurie started off his Sunday performance with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the 1st to tie things up at one all. The defense of both teams shined until the top of the 3rd as Wheeling took advantage of loaded bases to retake the lead. This would be the end of the line for the Cardinals, however, as the GSU offense began to shine. Colby Guy and Carlos De Jesus would both homer on back-to-back pitches and grasp the lead again, a position the Pioneers did not relinquish. A rock solid pitching effort and four subsequent insurance runs locked in a second-straight victory for the Pioneers, 7-2.

Final Stats
Wheeling
The Cardinals were only able to manage five hits in the contest with center fielder Nicholas Ancelet earning the only RBI of the outing for the Cardinals and picking up a stolen base as well. First baseman Spencer Craig was the only multi-hit squad member in game one with two singles on the day. Starter Sebastian Khan received the loss, his first on the year, in a 5-inning performance that saw him allow four runs and strike out eight.

Glenville State
Catcher Carlos De Jesus led the way with two RBIs, one of them coming off of a solo home run. Right fielder Zach Laurie had an RBI from a solo home run and having an additional hit, while first baseman Colby Guy would also put one over the outfield wall and have an additional single as well. Center fielder Jacob Meadows and third baseman Austin Carter rounded out the multi-hit batters for the Pioneers. Austin Corn would pick up his first win on the season, striking out two in four innings pitched.

Game Two – GSU 3 I Wheeling 2
The second round of play would be something of an old schooler's dream with a defensive stalemate getting underway from the start. Laurie represented the only break in the stifling, sending his second deep bomb of the afternoon over the right field wall in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals didn't respond until the top of the 3rd on a single that scored a runner from second to tie things back up. This would be short-lived, with Adam Bright bringing De Jesus and Lance Minson all the way home and grab a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 4th. Though the Cardinals made things interesting with a run in the top of the 6th, the Pioneer pitching staff and defense would step up to stuff the comeback and secure a 3-2 slugfest victory.

Final Stats
Wheeling
Craig had another solid outing in the second game with two hits and an RBI while Ancelet rounded out the multi-hit Cardinals with a pair of base knocks as well. Shortstop Nicholas Schulz brought home the other RBI for Wheeling and additionally stole a base. Jaden Wilcox did his best in a complete game that saw him allow six hits and strike out nine, though he would still receive his 3rd loss of the year.

Glenville State
Laurie would be the only Pioneer in game two with multiple hits, which included his second bomb of the afternoon and earned him an RBI as well as logging a stolen base. Adam Bright received two RBIs for a double while Carlos De Jesus also had an extra base hit with a double himself. Trent Taylor showed out in a start that saw him throw 5.1 innings and strike out five, earning the 3rd win of his freshman season while Grant Landis received the save for his efforts in the final frame.

Up Next For The Pioneers
Glenville State Baseball has a six-day break before traveling to the capital city for a doubleheader with the University of Charleston next Saturday (Apr. 5). Game one is set for a first pitch time of 1 p.m.
