Baseball Falls to Charleston in First Two Games of Series

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The GSU Baseball team began a four-game swing in the capital city this weekend on Saturday (Apr. 5) afternoon, clashing with the homestanding Golden Eagles. The Pioneers were unable to come out on top in the first round of doubleheaders, losing game one, 9-2, and barely dropping game two by a result of 2-1. The losses take GSU to (14-16) on the year snd (3-9) in conference while Charleston improved to (12-18) and (7-5) in MEC play.

Game One – GSU 2 I Charleston 9
The first half of Saturday's action began with UC hopping out to a fast start, scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Pioneers would strike back in the top of the 3rd with Colby Guy and Carlos De Jesus each knocking in a run to make the score 6-2. Things stayed at a standstill until the bottom of the 6th when the Golden Eagles brought in three insurance runs. Unable to get the bats going again, GSU would fall in game one, 9-2.

Final Stats
Charleston
Damian Witty and Evan Ulrich each had a pair of RBIs in the first outing while five others each recorded one. Ulrich was also the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits and also recorded a double. Devin Fletcher received the win on the mound, his second in 2025.

Glenville State
Colby Guy and Carlos De Jesus both had a single RBI each. Lance Minson went 3-for-3, including two doubles and Zach Laurie had two hits himself. Grant Landis took the loss on the mound, now sitting at (2-3) on the season.

Game Two – GSU 1 I Charleston 2
The second battle of the afternoon was a defensive slugfest, with neither team giving much ground in the field. Charleston struck quickly in the bottom of the 1st, bringing in a pair to give them a 2-0 lead. The Pioneer defense would rise up after this, stunting UC for the rest of the game. GSU then broke their goose egg in the top of the 3rd with Austin Carter bringing Adam Bright home to cut the lead to one. However, this would spell the end of offense in this one, with both teams hitting the wall the remainder of the game and allowing the Golden Eagles to take both wins on the day.

Final Stats
Charleston
The home team had only two hits in the contest with Casey Finck getting the lone RBI on a single and Evan Ulrich finding his way to a double. Damian Witty scored on a passed ball to constitute the rest of the offense. Trace Hartman picked up the win in relief, his first of the year.

Glenville State
Carter led the scoring charge for the Pioneers with two hits, including one double and an RBI. Lance Minson, Zach Laurie, Colby Guy and Adam Bright all had one hit apiece and Jacob Meadows recorded his 10th stolen base of the year in the game. Cole Grady took the loss, striking out six in four innings pitched.

Up Next For The Pioneers
Pioneer Baseball will be in action tomorrow (Apr. 7) for their second doubleheader at Charleston. The first pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
