Pioneers Take Game One, Drop Game Two Against WVSU

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Pioneer Baseball got the weekend going yesterday (Apr. 12) with their first spin with the visiting West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, with another doubleheader scheduled for today (Apr. 13). The first round between the conference foes saw a split in the victories, GSU taking game one, 5-3, and WVSU winning in game two, 12-6. The results of the day find the Pioneers now at (15-19) overall and (4-12) in MEC play while the Yellow Jackets sit at (14-16) and (7-9) in league play.

Game One – GSU 5 I WVSU 3
The Pioneers utilized a blazing fast start to secure the victory in game one, which got going in the favor early with Austin Carter scoring on an error in the bottom of the first. Adam Bright would watch four go by to bring Lance Minson home and make things 2-0 after the first. Luke Sweigart then kicked the door down with a 3-run bomb to right field that gave the homestanding Pioneers a 5-0 lead. However, the Yellow Jackets locked in defensively and started pushing back with the bats, scoring one in the third on a sac fly. With the bats for the Pioneers becoming a little less active, WVSU cut the lead to two in the bottom of the 5th to make it 5-3 heading into the final two frames. It was in these innings where GSU would hold their ground defensively and stifle the possibility of a rally, with GSU gaining an important conference victory with the regular season beginning to wind down.

Final Stats
West Virginia State
Cameron Fizer led the Yellow Jackets in RBIs with a pair coming in on a 5th inning single, while Nate Paulsen received the other on the game via a sac fly. Paulsen also reached three times by walk and scored a run. Charlie McGuiness had the lone extra base hit with a double. JT Fabian took the loss, striking out four and dropping his record to (3-4) on the season.

Glenville State
Luke Sweigart would be the most productive stat stuffer with a home run that also give him three RBIs, also his first bomb of the year. Austin Carter and Lance Minson both had two hits while Adam Bright received the other RBI through a walk. Quinn Lenamon had a double and reached by a walk as well. Cole Grady secured his 2nd win on the year while Cameron Byers was credited with the save.

Game Two – GSU 6 I WVSU 12
The offenses came to play in the second round of action, with the Yellow Jackets rattling off four in the top of the 1st. They would continue this trend with an additional three in the 2nd to make it 7-0 while the Pioneers waited for the bats to come alive.  This changed in the bottom of the 5th through a home run by Carlos De Jesus, who had two on the day, to make it 9-4 with the final two innings of play approaching. The Yellow Jacket attack continued, however, pacing their lead out once more with a 3-run performance in the top of the 6th. Though the Pioneers pushed back with another De Jesus bomb in the 7th, it would not be enough, as WVSU took revenge and the win, 12-6.

Final Stats
West Virginia State
Brodie Guenther led the way with three hits and one RBI, as well as reaching by walk twice. Paulsen had another solid outing with two RBIs and reaching by walk three times, as well as reaching once by hit. Charlie McGuinness had an impressive performance himself with two hits and four RBIs.
