Softball Sets Single-Season Wins Record with Doubleheader Sweep at Salem

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Glenville State Softball team made history today with their doubleheader sweep at Salem, breaking the program's single-season wins record with their 30th victory in the second game of the DH. The Pioneers took game one, 8-2, while completing the record-breaking day with a 7-3 win in game two.

Game One - GSU 8 | Salem 2
It was a stalemate in the opening three innings at The Bridge Sports Complex with neither squad scoring. However, that quickly changed with a four-run 4th inning by the Pioneers, playing runs on a pair of doubles from Monica Rodelo and Emma McLean. Kylie Burdick held the Tigers scoreless and GSU added onto their advantage in the 6th with a two-run shot by Addison Aguiniga and an RBI single from Makenna Negley. SU put their first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the 6th before Aguiniga recorded her fourth RBI of the contest in the top of the 7th. Burdick closed out the bottom half of the seventh by inducing a double play, finishing the Pioneers 29th win, 8-2.

Kylee Goodman and Makenna Negley both recorded three hits while three other Pioneers had two hits each. Addison Aguiniga led the team with four RBIs, followed by Emma McLean's two RBIs. Monica Rodelo and Makenna Negley also had an RBI each in the victory. Kylie Burdick tied the GSU single-season wins record (16) with the W as the junior went all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk, also striking out three.

Game Two - GSU 7 | Salem 3
An error by the Pioneer defense allowed Salem to jump out to an early 1-0 lead, an advantage that would stick up into the fourth inning. In the top half of the 4th, an RBI from Monica Rodelo and 2-RBI double by Emma McLean put the Pioneers in the driver's seat. Just two innings later, Zailes Seda knocked an RBI single and stole home to plate two more for GSU. The Tigers answered back in the 6th, but a RBI double by Delaney Warnick and RBI single from Monica Rodelo in the top of the 7th added plenty of insurance for the Pioneers. Though SU notched a run of their own in the bottom frame, Glenville State went on to win their 30th game of the season, 7-3.
