Late Runs by Charleston Dooms Pioneers in Final Games of Series

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team was on the road again yesterday (Apr. 7) afternoon for their second doubleheader in three days against the University of Charleston. The second round saw the Pioneers unable to come out on top in two close games, dropping game one by a score of 1-0 and game two with a tally of 5-3. The results find the Pioneers now at (14-18) on the season and (3-11) in conference, now in 5th place in the MEC South Division, while the Golden Eagles improved to (14-18) and (9-5) in the MEC, now in 2nd place in the South Divison behind leader Concord.

Game One – GSU 0 I Charleston 1
The first face-off between GSU and UC was a defensive stalemate that would make any old schooler proud with both teams recording only five hits apiece. Both squads showed their defensive prowess, with starting pitchers Austin Corn and Austin Perado putting in masterful performances on the mound. This stalemate found both teams knotted at 0 when the bottom of the 7th passed, with the deadlock only being broken in the bottom of the eight via a single that gave the Golden Eagles a walk-off victory, 1-0.

Final Stats
Charleston
Ryan Comella secured the walk-off hit in his only at bat of the game, also notching the only RBI of the contest. No Charleston batter had more than one hit, though Damian Witty reached base three times by walk. Casey Finck would have their lone extra base hit, a double in the 8th, that placed the winning run on seconnd base. Reliever Alex Mendoza received the win to improve his record to (2-0) on the year.

Glenville State
Luke Sweigart was the only multi-hit batter in the game, recording two singles in three at bats. Quinn Lenamon, Austin Carter and Lance Minson covered the remainder of the knocks for the Pioneers. After Corn, three more arms would see action on the bump, with Luka Moore receiving the loss, his first in 2025.

Game Two – GSU 3 I Charleston 5
The second squabble of the day felt like a rerun of the first game through the first half of action, with both squads being held scoreless through the 3rd inning. Offense would finally be resurrected in the bottom of the 4th, with Luke Sweigart bringing home Lance Minson on a single to 3rd base to break the stalemate. Colby Guy then rode the offensive wave and brought a pair of runners to the promised land on a single to center field. The Golden Eagles found their groove not long after, however, tying things up with a three-run performance of their own in the bottom of the 5th. The bottom of the 6th proved to be the difference maker, with Charleston scoring two in the frame to pace their only lead of the game. The Pioneers were unable to rally in the top of the 7th, giving the Golden Eagles their second victory of the afternoon.

Final Stats
Charleston
Casey Finck had another solid outing in game two with two hits and two RBIs to lead the way. Samuel Lemond made a large contribution himself, scoring two runs and recording two hits, including a triple. Tyler Parks and Ryan Comella made up the rest of the hits for the Golden Eagles. Landon Ingram secured the victory to even his record at (2-2) this season.

Glenville State
Colby Guy had the most productive game at the plate, recording two RBIs on a lone single. Luke Sweigart had the other RBI, while Zach Laurie, Quinn Lennamon and Lance Minson also recorded hits. Minson also had his 8th stolen base of the year. Seven pitchers got a shot on the rubber, with Josue Matos ultimately receiving the loss, his first of 2025.

Up Next For The Pioneers
GSU Baseball will next see action this Saturday (Apr. 12), returning to the SMSC to battle with West Virginia State. It will be another doubleheader, with things currently slated for a 1 p.m first pitch.
