GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team salvaged the weekend with a 5-1 win over Walsh on Sunday (Mar. 1) after dropping the first two games of the Atlantic Region Crossover to Shepherd, 8-7, and Indiana (Pa.), 13-4, on Friday (Feb. 27) and Saturday (Feb. 28). The Pioneers are now (7-4) overall through the first three weekends of the season.
Game One – GSU 7 | Shepherd 8
Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez recorded an RBI in the top of the 2
nd before an error allowed
Greyson McNeill to score and an RBI single from
Adam Bright made it 3-0. Three innings later,
Jacob Meadows singled to left to put GSU up 4-0. The Rams answered back mightily in the bottom of the 5
th, plating six runs to jump ahead.
Austin Carter pulled the Pioneers right back in with a two-run home run in the 7
th inning, however, SU quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
An inning later, Cajigas-Martinez trotted across home plate on a wild pitch to once again tie things up. In a wild finish, Shepherd walked it off by stealing home in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 8-7 win over the Pioneers.
Game Two – GSU 4 | Indiana (Pa.) 13
IUP got on the board fast and early, notching four runs in the first inning, one in the second stanza and six runs in the 3
rd inning.
Ashton Crace and
Adam Bright logged RBIs in the 5
th and 6
th innings while
JD Ford had a sac fly in the 8
th to make it 11-3. Indiana (Pa.) added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the eighth and
Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez tripled in the 9
th to earn another RBI on the weekend as the Crimson Hawks won the Saturday matchup, 13-4, in Morgantown.
Game Three – GSU 5 | Walsh 1
Gavin Blair and
Ashton Crace both had a sac fly in the 2
nd inning to give GSU an early 2-0 lead while
Adam Bright would join the sac fly party in the 5
th inning with an unusual two-run sac fly that made it 4-0, Glenville. Walsh threatened and scored via error in the 7
th inning, but the Pioneers escaped with just one run given up in the stanza. A wild pitch allowed Bright to give
William Chu another insurance run, as Chu wouldn't need it with an impressive two innings of work out of the bullpen to close out the Cavaliers, 5-1.
