GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Softball team bounced back from dropping two at Concord earlier in the week with a pair of doubleheader sweeps against West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins at home on Saturday (Mar. 28) and Sunday (Mar. 29). The Pioneers improved to (21-9) overall and (8-2) in league play with the four victories.
Saturday (Mar. 28)
Game One - GSU 9 | WVWC 1 (6 Inn.)
After the Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the first, the Pioneers answered back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Kylee Goodman walked with the bases loaded, and
Hannah Howe cleared the bases with a triple and then scored on that same play via an error. The next inning,
Emily Nolan notched an RBI to extend the lead to 6-1. Howe recorded another RBI in the 5
th inning and a passed ball allowed
Morgan Webb to score as the Pioneers inched closer to a run-rule victory.
Delaney Warnick closed the book early in the sixth with an RBI double, securing the 9-1 victory for GSU.
Game Two - GSU 3 | WVWC 1
The Pioneer pitching staff proved to be impressive once again, giving up just one run in the win. The scoring started on an error and a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, allowing Glenville State to go up 2-0.
Macie Duvall tripled in the third stanza to bring home
Zailees Seda, extending the Pioneer lead to 3-0. WVWC got on the board in the 5
th inning, but it was far too late as
Maci Boggess notched her 10
th win of the season in Glenville's 3-1 victory.Â
Sunday (Mar. 29)
Game One - GSU 7 | Davis & Elkins 2
Much like game one on Saturday, the Pioneers got on their opponent early and heavy.
Kylee Goodman and
Lillian Burns logged RBIs in the second inning before
Emily Nolan and
Hannah Howe notched RBIs of their own in the 3
rd inning to give GSU a 4-0 advantage. In the fourth inning,
Shelby McDaniels doubled to make it a five-run game and
Zailees Seda brought home two on a sac fly. D&E cut into the lead in the sixth inning with two runs, but the Pioneers fended off the Senators to take the 7-2 win.
Game Two - GSU 5 | Davis & Elkins 4
Davis & Elkins got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the 2nd inning, however, the Pioneers quickly responded with a sac fly and a walk to take the lead at 2-1.
Delaney Warnick and
Emily Nolan extended the GSU lead in the third with a sac fly each, making it 4-1. The Senators stormed back in the 5
th inning, plating three to notch it up at four apiece.
Shelby McDaniels would then play hero in the bottom of the 7
th with a walk-off sacrifice fly that brought in
Emma McLean as GSU capped off the weekend with a 5-4 win.
Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers are set for a big Easter weekend on the road, traveling to Charleston on Friday (Apr. 3) and West Virginia State on Sunday (Apr. 4).
