Pioneers Storm Back in Game One, Fall in Extras in Game Two Versus Concord

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Softball team used a four-run seventh inning to storm back and beat Concord, 5-4, in game one of their doubleheader on Wednesday (Apr. 22) at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. The Mountain Lions answered back in game two, scoring a run in back-to-back innings to secure the split and move the Pioneers to (31-13, 18-6 MEC) on the year.

Game One – GSU 5 | Concord 4
Delaney Warnick continued her hot streak with an opening home run for the Pioneers in the bottom of the 1st inning, however, the Mountain Lions quickly answered back with a run in the 2nd and another in the third inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Both teams went zero for zero the next three innings until Concord used a two-run home run from Lewis to make it a 4-1 game.

The Pioneers mustered together some late-inning magic in the seventh, trimming the deficit to two on an RBI single from Alexis Harward. Zailees Seda then walked with the bases loaded, allowing another run to cross. Shelby McDaniels worked long at-bat that ended in an out, but it would prove to be critical for the next Pioneer batter. With two outs and trailing by one run, Warnick roped a single up the middle that was nearly caught on the dive by the centerfielder, but it would drop as the Pioneers walked it off for a 5-4 victory.

Game Two – GSU 2 | Concord 3 (8 Inn.)
The first two innings saw little offense, but that changed when Concord broke up the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning on an RBI single in the right field gap. The Pioneers were able to get their offense rolling in the bottom half of the inning, with Emily Nolan and Lillian Burns notching RBIs to give GSU a 2-1 lead. After three innings of no runs, Concord knotted it up in the top of the 7th with an RBI single before scoring the eventual game-winner in the top of the 8th. The Pioneers had opportunities in the 7th and 8th innings, but a strong finish by Concord's Madison Hollis allowed CU to leave with a split, 3-2.
