ATHENS, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team used a 15-run performance in game two of their doubleheader at Concord today (May 1) to split with the Mountain Lions in the Pioneers final away games of the season. Concord took game one, 4-2, before GSU captured game two, 15-14, in a wild finish in Athens. The Pioneers now sit at (27-19) overall and (16-12) in league play.
Game One – GSU 2 | Concord 4
It was unusual day for Pioneers ace
Zach Dellerman, who Concord hopped on early like no team has come close to doing in the senior's standout season. The Mountain Lions had two runs in the inning, a solo and three-run shot, to go up 4-0 after an inning of play. Neither team put together much offense until the 6
th inning when
Adam Bright notched an RBI to trim the deficit to three. Greyson McNeil had a home run of his own in the top of the 7
th and GSU put the tying run on base, but Concord's Kaden Varela-Payne pitched a strong complete game with 10 strikeouts to close the door on the Pioneers, 4-2.
Game Two – GSU 15 | Concord 14
The Pioneers and Mountain Lions combined for 29 runs, 28 hits and five errors in Glenville State's wild 15-14 victory to split with CU. After Concord had an RBI single in the first, the Pioneers had an astounding second inning with nine runs crossing home plate.
Carlos De Jesus and
Greyson McNeill both homered in the inning while
Marlon Bravo,
Adam Bright,
Zach Laurie and
Luke Sweigart all had RBIs.
Ashton Crace and Laurie then joined the home run party in the following stanza, extending GSU's advantage to 12-1.
With the game looking out of reach, it quickly became closer than the Pioneers would like. Concord added six runs to the board in the 3
rd, putting Glenville State's once large lead to just five, 12-7.
Austin Carter added onto GSU's lead in the fourth, but the Mountain Lions climbed even closer with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sweigart and Carter helped Glenville State push their run total in the top of the 5
th, but Concord fought back with three more runs in the bottom half to make it 15-13. With bases loaded and one out,
Trent Taylor forced a ground ball but the Pioneers were only able to get one out, allowing CU to trim it 15-14. Taylor stayed poised and fanned Lucas Cannon with the tying run standing on third to secure the doubleheader split for the Pioneers.
