CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team won their first MEC Tournament game since 2022 with a 14-run explosion over the MEC North Division champions, Wheeling, in Charleston on Wednesday (May 6). The Pioneers 14-7 win over the Cardinals moves GSU to (28-21) overall and into the winners bracket.

In a game that started late due to weather and went nine innings as do all tournament games, the Pioneers didn't feel bothered. A four-run first inning was then backed up with one run in the 3
rd and three runs in the 4
th to allow the Pioneers to jump out to an 8-1 lead after three. The Cardinals were able to showcase some power inside GoMart Ballpark, blasting two home runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut their deficit to just four, 8-4.
The GSU bats had ace
Zach Dellerman's back in the sixth inning, plating five runs on a pair of RBI singles by
Luke Sweigart and
Carlos De Jesus as well as a huge bases-clearing double from
Adam Bright. Wheeling made it interesting again in the 7
th, putting across three runs to make it 13-7. Glenville State added another run in the eighth, and
Grant Landis completed his work out of the bullpen with a popup to De Jesus as GSU secured the opening round win, 14-7.

Wheeling had three different players notch two hits each with Chris Alvarez going 1-for-4 but having a team-leading two RBIs. Five other Cardinals finished the game with one RBI apiece. MEC Pitcher of the Year Sebastian Khan was ran out of the game early, going just 2.1 innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, three walks and one hit by pitch.

Seven Pioneers recorded a hit, as
Jacob Meadows and
Ashton Crace produced three knocks each.
Adam Bright,
Greyson McNeill and
Carlos De Jesus recorded two hits apiece while Crace and Bright tied for the team lead in RBIs with three. All-MEC First Team selection
Zach Dellerman went five innings to get the win, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk. He also struck out five in the victory.
Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will play the loser of Frostburg State and Charleston on Friday (May 8) at noon. GSU lost both games versus FSU in March and split with Charleston in a four-game series in April.
