CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Glenville State Baseball team saw a late lead against Charleston dwindle away in heartbreak fashion before seniors
Grant Landis and
Zach Dellerman put the Pioneers on their backs against Point Park to stay alive in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. GSU fell to UC, 5-4, and blanked PPU, 2-0, in the nightcap as Glenville State is now just one of four teams remaining in the capital city.
Game One - GSU 4 | Charleston 5
Zach Laurie picked up an early RBI single as GSU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Charleston tied things up in the 4th inning with an RBI double, which ended up being the only run that
Trent Taylor surrendered in his 5.1 innings of work. The Golden Eagles then took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning, using an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-1. Laurie notched his second RBI of the game and
Ashton Crace singled in
Adam Bright in the 8th as the Pioneers regained the advantage.
Carlos De Jesus joined the RBI single party in the top of ninth, however, UC had just two outs remaining on their season before a double with the bases loaded and an error secured the 5-4 walk-off win and kept Charleston's season alive.Â
Game Two - GSU 2 | Point Park 0
In a classic pitcher's duel, Glenville State needed just two runs to log their second win of the MEC Tournament.
Ashton Crace ripped a single through the right side in the first inning to put GSU on the board early, and
Greyson McNeill added onto the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single of his own as GSU led 2-0 more than halfway through.
Grant Landis gave head coach Jimmy Mullins four solid innings of one-hit ball before
Zach Dellerman grabbed the keys and took over. The Wheeling transfer struck out seven and allowed just two hits with no walks in the remaining five innings to shut the door on PPU.Â
Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will take on Frostburg State at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow (May 9) inside GoMart Ballpark for a chance to punch their ticket to Sunday's (May 10) championship game. The Bobcats swept GSU in two games earlier in the season.
