Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team came up with a big sweep over the UVa-Wise Cavaliers on day two at the Sue Morris Complex.
The Pioneers had a big fifth inning and racked up 11 hits as they scored seven runs defeating the Cavaliers in game one of the afternoon.
Tanner Helms started the scoring for GSC in the second inning with a double which scored
Zach Sanford as the Pioneers led 1-0.
GSC then scored four runs in the third inning as they took a commanding 5-0 lead.
UVa-Wise got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as they scored two runs making it a three run game, 5-2.
However the Pioneers added two more runs in the fifth as
Zach Sanford doubled to left scoring
John Peloro and
Tanner Helms singled to center scoring
Zach Sanford as GSC won 7-2.
Zach Sanford led the Pioneers as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Tanner Helms went 2-for-2 and finished with two RBI's.
Sanford also picked up his second win of the season on the mound as he pitched 5.2 innings allowing eight hits, two runs, and had three strike outs.
Game two saw both teams go scoreless until the Pioneers struck first in the sixth inning as
John Peloro hit a deep two run homerun as he lifted GSC past the Cavaliers, 2-0.
The Pioneers finished with eight hits while the Cavaliers had seven hits.
John Peloro led GSC as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a homerun while
Kyle Johnston finished the game 2-for-4.
Tanner Helms had a great game on the mound as he pitched the complete game allowing seven hits and striking out two batters.
Glenville State (10-18, 7-9) will return to action at home this Tuesday, April 11
th as they host Winston Salem at 3:00 p.m. from the Sue Morris Sports Complex.
