Wrestling Defeats Fairmont State and Nationally Ranked Campbellsville

GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Wrestling team put in a strong performance in their first home event of the season Thursday afternoon. They defeated Fairmont 55-0, then battled Campbellsville, the ninth ranked team in the nation in NAIA, and captured a 34-13 victory over the Tigers.

In the first match of the afternoon, the two visiting schools to Morris Stadium squared off, with Campbellsville defeating Fairmont 33-15. The Tigers captured seven of the ten weight classes in garnering the win.

Mountain East Conference foes Fairmont and Glenville matched up in the second contest of the day. GSC captured all ten weight classes in the event, rolling to a 55-0 victory. The league win for Cottrell's squad avenged last season's 23-22 loss the Pioneers suffered to the Falcons.

In the day's final matchup, Glenville battled the powerful Campbellsville team through ten competitive matches. In the second match of the day, GSC's fans were roused by an exciting pin from Devin Easton. From there, the Pioneers rode that momentum through the rest of the match, receiving another late boost, when Hunter Delong came from behind in the final round, registering a late pin for victory at 174. The result was a convincing 34-13 win.

Individually, a handful of Pioneers wrestlers captured both of their matches on the day; Devin Easton (133), Ethan Hardy (149), Gavin Quiocho (157), Hunter Jones (165), Hunter DeLong (174), Cole Houser (184), . Several other Pioneers posted wins and went 1-1 in the event; Kevin Meloni (125), Alec Fulwider (141), and Jordan Williams (189). Heavyweights Luke Martin and Gavin Shamblin won their lone matches of the day.

"I felt like we wrestled hard and brought a lot of energy as a team," Glenville Head Coach Dylan Cottrell said. "I also felt like our conditioning came in to play, as several our guys were able to make some strong moves late in their matches. That is a testament to the hard work they have put in during the preseason."

Glenville returns to action this Sunday, traveling to Tiffin University.
