Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, SC – Glenville's Baseball team received two more outstanding pitched games on Sunday afternoon, winning twice in the doubleheader, completing a four-game sweep at Benedict College. On Sunday, they defeated BC in game one 20-1, and 3-1 in the final game of the series.
In Game One, Abe Stearns started and gave the Pioneers five scoreless innings. He did not walk a batter, while striking out one. Trevon Smith delivered the big blow of the game, belting a towering grand slam in the fourth inning. Stearns, who has been a reliever for the program throughout his career, earned the victory in his first career start. The trio of Josue Matos, Nick Moore, and Coby Howatineck provided relief on the mound in the final two innings.
In Game Two, Ryker Rivera provided the game-winner, hitting a dramatic two-run homer in the top of the sixth, breaking a 1-1 tie. The first GSC run was tallied earlier on a steal of home by Matthew Mangum. It was pitching by committee in the series finale; Julian Minaya for two innings, Tristan Gasset for two, Austin Corn for two, and Jose Rodriguez the seventh. Corn earned the victory, the first in the career for the freshman. The veteran Rodriguez earned the save.
For the day, Glenville pitching only allowed a total of nine Benedict hits, three in Game One and six in Game Two.
GSC hosts Mansfield University next weekend in the home opening series for the Pioneers. Coach Jimmy Mullins' squad will bring their perfect 4-0 record back to the Sue Morris Complex for a four-game set with the Mountaineers. Doubleheaders are set for Saturday and Sunday, starting at 1:00 on each day. It will be the season opener for Mansfield.
