Box Score Beckley- The Glenville Pioneers defeated Frostburg State 8-7 in dramatic fashion picking up the second post season win ever in school history. The Glenville bullpen and defense where able to secure the win for the Pioneers. In Game two the Pioneers took an early lead and didn't look back. Glenville has now won three straight games all coming in the postseason. The Pioneers historic run continues with the championship games tomorrow.
What Happened
Game 1 GSU 9 Frostburg State 8
The Pioneers once again got off to hot start scoring five runs in the first three innings. Mathew Mangum's double to center field drove in the first two runs for Glenville in the bottom of the second. Senior
Hunter Brown later in the inning was able to drive home Mangum off a double down the left field line. Mangum struck again in the bottom of the third scoring anther run for the Pioneers. Mangum finished the day with three RBI's, the most on the team.
Frostburg in the top of the fourth scored their first run from center fielder Danny Estrada.
Julian Minaya was able give the Pioneers five innings and struck out five batters. However, Frostburg was able to score five runs in the sixth inning to make it a tied game. A double from Bryce Jackson and a grand slam by AJ Campbell scored the runs for the Bobcats.
Entering the bottom of the seventh with the game still tied, Glenville was able to score two more runs. The bottom half of the inning started with
Tre'von Smith advancing to first by getting hit by the pitch. The next batter
Calen Kampes homered to left center field, his tenth of the season.
The bullpen for the Glenville had been their strongest aspect of the team all year.
Nick Moore was able to pick up the win for the Pioneers by pitching two key innings and striking out three batters. In the bottom of the eighth inning
Yadiel Agosto made a key defensive play for Glenville saving the potential tying run. Moore was able set up the pitcher of the year
Adam Riggleman to enter the ninth
inning. The Senior was able to end the game striking out the last batter for Frostburg.
Game 2 GSU 8 Concord 6
Just like in the first game today the Pioneers scored early and often. With the tournament entering the third day offense and timely pitching was going to decide the game. The Hitman
Tre'von Smith once again was on fire and drove in the first two runs for the Pioneers on a single through the right side. Smith finished the day with three hits in four at bats.
Fabian Escalante scored the last run for the Pioneers from a sacrifice fly to right field
Chase Swain started the game for the Pioneers and was able to pitch three and two-thirds innings. Swain only allowed four hits during his outing and accumulated two strikeouts.
Jose Rodriguez gave the Pioneers one and -two-third inning to set up Abe Stearns to close out the rest of the game. Stearns was the definition of clutch for Glenville. During his three and two-thirds innings for the Pioneers only allowed one hit and struck out five batters.
Concord in the bottom of the ninth with one out hit a home run to make it a two-run game. The next Mountain Lions popped out to the short stop
Zach Morris and struck out looking to end the game.
What's Next for Glenville
Since the Pioneers picked up a loss during the first day of the conference tournament, Glenville will have to beat the Golden Eagles of Charleston twice. The first game starts tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Linda K, Epling Stadium. If game two is necessary, the projected start time would be 4:30 p.m. The Pioneers are the only team in the conference to defeat Charleston in a series this year.
