GSU Wrestling Set to Compete at Mountain East Conference Championship

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Wrestling program is set to compete in the 2023 Mountain East Conference Tournament. Saturday marks the third time that the team has competed in the MEC championships. The event will be hosted by West Liberty in the Academic Sports and Recreation Complex with the tournament starting at 10:00 AM.

Glenville State enters the tournament with an overall record of (15-7) and a conference record of (4-0). The Pioneers have defeated two nationally ranked opponents this season defeating #16 Ashland University and #4 West Liberty University. GSU has also had superb showings at tournaments this year placing 9th at the Midwest Classic and winning the Virginia Duals.

Four individuals come into MEC Championship ranked nationally. Wrestling at the 285 weight class sophomore Jared Campbell is third in the country according to OpenMat along with Gavin Quiocho at #6 for the 133 weight class. During the 2022-23 campaign, Campbell has gone (21-1) in his matchets while defeating two Big 12 opponents. Quiocho placed third at the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate open. The Parkersburg W.Va. native has posted a record of (25-6) this season.

According to the latest NWCA poll, Hunter Delong ranks 12th in the country. Wrestling at the 174 weight class Delong has placed second at the Bob Del Rosa Oho Intercollegiate open. Hunter also picked up a win over #9 Hunter Reed from Findlay who is now fifth in the nation.  Cole Houser sits seventh in the nation for the 184 weight class and has been a constant scorer for GSU.
