GSU Volleyball Loses to Kutztown, Sweeps Chowan in Final Day of Viking Classic

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Glenville State Volleyball team continued play in the Viking Classic today (Sept. 5) against West Chester and Chowan, as the Pioneers lost 3-0 to the Golden Rams and swept the Hawks, making their record (4-5) on the young season.  

Game One - GSU 0 | West Chester 3
West Chester controlled the opening set, taking a 25-13 decision to take an early 1-0 lead. Glenville State continued to battle in the second set, but WCU pulled away to take a convincing 25-14 set two win and extend their advantage to 2-0. The Pioneers were unable to match West Chester's offense in the third set, with the Golden Rams logging another 25-14 set victory to claim the 3-0 sweep of Glenville State.

Gwen Atkins led the team in kills with 10, while Anna Richardson had nine. Ada Koksal led in assists with 26, and Brooke Forester had two. Atkins also had four blocks with Forester adding four service aces. Hailey Atkins led the Golden Rams in digs with seven and Elianna Freeman had five.

Glenville State
Kendel Harris led the Pioneers offensively with six kills with Mikayla Curry notching five kills and two blocks. Gracie Brown contributed four kills and a block, while Irmak Bezek paced the offense with nine assists. Kassie Swink led Glenville State defensively with seven digs.  

Game Two - GSU 3 | CU 0
Glenville State opened the second match with a strong offensive showing, recording 11 kills in the first set. The Pioneers held off a late push from Chowan to take the opening set, 25-23, and grab an early 1-0 advantage. The second set remained tightly contested, with both teams trading points throughout. Glenville State recorded 13 kills in the frame and again came through in the closing points, securing another 25-23 victory to move within one set of the sweep. With the match on the line, the Pioneers continued to apply pressure in the third set. Glenville State recorded 12 kills and limited Chowan, allowing the Pioneers to finish the sweep with a 25-22 win.

Chowan
Chowan was led offensively by Jada Caruthers, who finished with seven kills, while Rosa Lynn Collier followed with six. Andrea Krgovic led the team in assists with 20 as Alexa Fricker had three. Madison Henderson had three blocks while Alauna Wilson-Linn had four service aces.

Glenville State
Juliana Nunez led the Pioneers with 11 kills with Mikayla Curry and Ryann Landis each adding seven kills in the victory. Deniz Selen Yazar made an impact on both sides of the net with five blocks and two service aces. Irmak Bezek directed the offense with 20 assists, while Kassie Swink led the defensive effort with nine digs.   

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will play at home on Tuesday (Sept. 8) to host WVU Tech at the Waco Center for GSU's first home match of the 2026 season. The Pioneers are set to play at 6 p.m.
