SALEM – For the second consecutive match, Glenville's volleyball team found themselves engaged in a five-set marathon. Unfortunately for Pioneer fans, this night ended with GSC on the short end of the final score to the host Salem Tigers; 26-24, 25-9, 21-25, 16-25, 18-20. The teams battled for 209 total points on the night, including a heart-stopping final set that included each team surviving multiple match points from the opposing side.
Facing a raucous Salem student section, Glenville found themselves down for much of the first set, but rallied for an 11-6 run to close and take the opening stanza 26-24. Glenville carried that momentum into the second set, where the Pioneers dominated for a 25-9 set victory.
Salem came out strong in the third set, and established a quick 12-7 advantage. They would extend that lead, before GSC made a late set charge, coming up just short 21-25. Salem carried their own momentum into the fourth set, taking that frame 25-16. Going into the final set, each team fought through a myriad of the aforementioned match points. Glenville was down 12-14 and facing defeat, when they rebounded for three consecutive points and a 15-14 lead. The teams would be tied at 14-14, 15-15, 16-16, 17-17, and 18-18. Salem would score the final two points and take the match.
Skylar Mace paced the Pioneers with 14 kills, with Taylin Johnson producing 12. Johnson's tally included several points during the match's tightly contested final stages.
Glenville is back in action next Tuesday, traveling to Rio Grande for another non-conference tilt.
