Andy Jarrell
Class of 1989
Track & Field and Cross Country
Andy Jarrell entered GSC for the 1985 cross country season, and enjoyed a standout career in what was a “Golden Era” for GSC Track & Cross Country. A native of Flatwoods, West Virginia, he attended Braxton County High School where he was a two-year starter in football and broke two school records on the track.
Jarrell was a part of six GSC title teams, with the Pioneers winning both sports in the calendar years of 1986, 1987, and 1988. He was First-Team All-Conference all three years in cross country, finishing as league runner-up twice. He was on GSC teams that ran at Nationals three times, finishing 27th in 1986, 25th in 1987, and 19th in 1988…the highest finish in WVIAC history.
In GSC’s 1986 title at the WVIAC Championships, Jarrell was the high point man for GSC with 32 points. During his time running for GSC in the late 80’s, he was teammates with other GSC track greats such as Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame members Dave Darst ’87 and Charles “Bubby” Dent ’89 as well as Moochie Brown, Jay Dawkins ‘89, and Lloyd Willis ‘87.
After GSC, Jarrell served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Germany in Operation Desert Storm.
Andy currently lives in Ravenswood, where his twin sons Blake and Bryce enjoyed standout careers for Ravenswood High. They both now run for GSC, with Bryce earning Second-Team All-MEC honors in cross country last spring.
