Steve Buffington came to Glenville State College after being a star athlete at Ravenswood High School where he was a West Virginia High School AA All-State Football Player in 1971, Two-Time Little Kanawha Conference Wrestling Champion and Regional Wrestling Champion. He also held Fourth Place in Wrestling in the State.

Additionally Steve was the high school’s record holder in the 100 yard dash, 180 yard low hurdles and 440 yard relay; State Champion in low hurdles and the 440 yard relay; State Second Place Champion in the 100 yard dash; LKC record holder in the 100 yard dash and 180 yard low hurdles.

Buffington was a four year letterman in football at Glenville State; named WVIAC All-Conference in 1972; led the Conference in pass receiving in 1972, led the NAIA/National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in yards per catch with 20.3 in 1972, held or shared all GSC pass receiving records at the time of his graduation and was named Outstanding Back in the NAIA Semi-Final Championship Game in 1973 where he scored both of Glenville State’s touchdowns.

After graduation, “Buff” was named Outstanding Alumni Offensive Player in the 1975 Alumni vs. GSC game and was invited to Rookie Camp for the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League where he made five cuts before leaving camp on his own due to back problems.

Buffington was also Glenville State College Record Holder in the 100 yard dash with 9.8 seconds in 1975.
He fondly remembers his time on campus as a member of the TKE/Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity where he was named Outstanding Pledge and held the offices of Vice-President and Historian.

“Buff” taught health and coached wrestling at Ripley High School for several years.  After receiving his master’s degree from Marshall University, he held vice-principal positions at Ravenswood High School for six years and at Williamstown High School for three years before retiring to his Ravenswood home.

Buffington was inducted into the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
