Hall of Fame
Hamrick is a native of Spring Dale, West Virginia in rural Fayette County, where he was a multi-sport star Meadow Bridge High School. He began his college career with the West Virginia University basketball program, where he played a year on the Mountaineer Freshman team. After that season, he transferred to Glenville, where he played the rest of his career at GSU for Pioneer Hall of Fame head coach Leland Byrd. He was a member of the Pioneer football, basketball, and baseball teams while a student-athlete at GSU. At Glenville, he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Sigma Kappa, G-Club, Varsity Club, Student Council (Treasurer), Junior Class Vice President, and served on the Mercury Staff. As a Student, he was named to Who's Who in American Colleges. He received his B.A. in Mathematics, Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education. After Glenville, Hamrick embarked on a highly successful career as an educator, serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He served as a math teacher and coach at four West Virginia High Schools; Meadow Bridge, Rainelle, Clendenin, and Herbert Hoover for 16 years, and was Principal at Clendenin Junior High for 18 years. He later served as the Executive Secretary of the WVSSAC for four years. After retirement, he substitute taught for 22 years. Besides coaching, Hamrick has enjoyed a long career as an official and a Director of Championships. He officiated in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field for over 40 years on the high school level. He spent 20 of these years also officiating WVIAC Basketball. In 10 of his final 11 years wearing the stripes, his performance with the whistle allowed him to advance to the WVIAC Championship game in the old Charleston Civic Center. He was the long-time Director of the State High School Track Meet, the WVIAC Track Meet, and also two years as Director of the NAIA National Track Meet in Charleston. He also served a long tenure as the Director of the State High School Basketball Tournament. He served on the Glenville State Board of Governors, with a tenure as the Chair. His son Ed is the former Director of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, and served GSU as the Vice President of College Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation. Hamrick's son Mike is the former Athletic Director of Marshall University. Hamrick's twin grandsons Jamie and Hunter graduated from Glenville State in 2012. Outside of his life as an educator, Hamrick has continued to be a competitive runner and golfer throughout his years. He has ran over 20 marathons, and still holds the record for runners over 60-years old with a time of 1:54 in the 15-mile Charleston Distance Run. He still competes in local golf tournaments. He has lived on the family's Glenville farm for the last 12 years, and is an active member of the Glenville Golf Club.
