Name: Russell Porterfield, Athlete
Class of: 1939
Russell Porterfield, inducted posthumously, was a native of Richwood. He lettered in basketball and football at Glenville. and competed for the legendary Coach Nate Rohrbough. Russell led the Pioneers to their first WVIAC football title in 1937. Additionally he earned All Conference Honors in Football in 1938. Porterfield went on to become a very successful high school football coach at Webster Springs High School where his record was 125-18. After relocating to Macclenny, FL, he once again enjoyed much success in his coaching career, winning the State's High School Basketball Conference with 60 wins in a row and served as a high school principal for many years. Russell received a Silver Star for bravery during World War II. His widow, Mary Helen Smith '40 is also deceased. They are parents of two sons, who are both GSC grads, John Porterfield '69 and Steve Porterfield '75.
