Hall of Fame
John Flint, a Glenville High School graduate, lettered four years in football as a defensive back and was named WVIAC First Team All-Conference in 1967.
As much as he enjoyed football and playing for legendary Coaches Jesse R. Lilly, Jr. ’48, Bill Hanlin ’53 and Whitey Adolfson, he loved to play baseball for Coach Bill Douglas where he started as a freshman at second base on a veteran highly skilled team, lettered four years and received All-Conference honors.
His college life for four years consisted of playing football in the fall while serving as president of the “G” Club, i.e. the varsity athletic letterman’s club, working at all of the home basketball games as well as lifeguarding at the college pool during the winter months and playing baseball in the spring.
John received the prestigious Frank Montrose award during Homecoming 1968 and went on to a successful coaching career.
He served as head football coach at Gilmer County High School in 1969-70 before becoming head football coach at Harrisville High School where his team was one of only four teams that qualified for the State playoffs and the only team in the school’s history to make the State football playoffs.
John retired as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Parkersburg South High School where he managed an ultra-successful athletic program that was named the Most Outstanding Athletic Program in the State of West Virginia by the Charleston Gazette and was presented the Gazette Excellence’s Sports Award Trophy by winning the AAA State Championships in football, basketball, wrestling and soccer in 2003.
Flint was inducted into the Parkersburg South High School Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
He came out of retirement in July 2014 to accept the Wood County superintendent’s position and continues in this capacity at this writing.
John was involved in the planning and construction of the Erickson All Sports facility, a high tech multi-sports complex, at Parkersburg South High School.
