Dr. Nichols grew up in Glenville and played football for two years as a tight end for the Pioneers.  While at Glenville State College, he was a Charter Member of the scientific fraternity, Alpha Iota Chapter of Chi Beta Phi and developed a passion for officiating sports, especially basketball where he officiated several little league, junior high, junior varsity and GSC Alumni games.

After graduating from Glenville State College he attended medical school at West Virginia University, did his internship at Ohio Valley in Wheeling and came back to WVU for his three years of residency.  Additionally he was an instructor at the WVU School of Medicine before joining the Army as a medical doctor in 1972 where he served in this capacity until 1975.

Dr. Nichols and a friend/former classmate worked together in a Parkersburg, West Virginia medical practice from 1975-1995.

He returned to his native Glenville in 1995 and split his time between being the team physician at GSC and having a private practice in the City of Glenville where he served the citizens of Gilmer County until 2008.

Since that time, he has been a dedicated full time team physician for the Pioneers.  His dedicated work for Glenville State College includes being onsite for all football practices and games; also traveling to away football games.  Dr. Nichols is available at the Waco Center for all home basketball games and he accompanies these teams to their basketball tournaments.  Additionally he is regularly available in his office for consultation and follow-up treatment of injuries and illnesses.

A great service is indeed being delivered to Glenville State College and a GSC/WVU educated physician is able to continue to apply his knowledge and skills in a supportive and appreciative institution which just happens to be his alma mater.  This is a rare, if not unique, arrangement in a Division II college athletic program.  Dr. Nichols is thought to be a “Godsend” to the College’s athletic program and as such is being inducted into the Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame in the Meritorious Service category.

Just as he could be counted on to do whatever it took to get his block or make the catch when he played for the Pioneers, Dr. Nichols still has the determination and desire to help our athletes and the athletic programs at Glenville State after almost 20 years of service to the institution for which we are most grateful.
