Class of: 1973
Steve Datcher, a native of Indian Head, Maryland, graduated from Lackey High School in 1969 where he made All-State in basketball and was among the top five hundred basketball players in the country. At GSC, still competing in basketball, he was the 1969-1972 career rebounding leader with 683 points and the 1969-1973 career scoring leader with 1397 points. He received WVIAC All Tournament honors in 1970 and 1972 and won All-Conference honors in 1972 and 1973. Datcher was named WVIAC Tournament Most Valuable Player in 1972. He received All-American honors in 1972 and was selected to play on the NAIA All-American basketball team that toured Israel during the spring of 1973. Datcher was team captain in 1971-1972 and one of three co-captains in 1972-1973 with Ron Jones and Jim Garnett. Remembered as a basketball great during the Jesse Lilly, Jr. era, he enjoyed a successful coaching career for twenty-eight years. Steve died in January 2006. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, and son, Steven Trent.
